During the prayers of Consecration, Jesus makes the wafer into Himself. So it's not really a wafer any more, once it becomes the Eucharist.
We worship Christ, and as the Eucharist is Christ made physically present, we bow before receiving the Eucharist in acknowledgment that He is present within the Eucharist.
One can't quite say that Catholics "worship the wafer" because we aren't worshiping bread -- we're worshiping Christ. And we don't think that He is limited to the size/shape of the Eucharist as it is presented to us because this is more of an extension of His Body, which is in Heaven. Does that make sense? It isn't easy to grasp for everyone.
We believe that Jesus is capable of making the bread into Himself, as He demonstrated in His very first miracle that He is capable of transubstantiating one element into another -- water into wine, in that particular case (see John 2).
We also know that He is capable of taking a limited, defined quantity of food and multiply it to feed many, many people -- fishes and loaves in one particular instance (see Matthew 14).
Furthermore, we know that Jesus very graphically said that consuming His flesh ("gnawing" is the literal word) and drinking His blood is necessary (John 6) and the people who did not like the literal meaning of this left Jesus and were no longer His disciples. Those who understood that He would make the literal meaning possible as He did His earlier miracles stayed with Him, and we stay with Him, too.
Hope this helps.

Jesus took the bread and said "Take this and eat it. It IS MY BODY. They believe that when Jesus said this, that he wasn't lying.
Therefore, the REAL and PHYSICAL Jesus is present in the wafer. If it wasn't, Jesus would need to be a liar.
If Jesus was really and physically present before you would you thumb your nose and turn your back on him, or would you show him reverence?
So, either Jesus was telling the truth, and the bread is his body, and deserves respect, or Jesus was a liar, and "just kidding", and there is no respect due.
Which do you choose?
Also, Dear Suzi, you end your question (read accusation) with a charge to answer "yes" or "no". You asked no "yes" or "no" question. You asked "why". There is no "yes" or "no" to back up. If you care to ask a binary question, I'll gladly give you a binary response.
Here's something for you though.
YES. Try and figure out what that might mean in response to the question you asked.

We bow down before the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
At the Last Supper, Jesus said, “Take this bread. It is my body.” Then he said, “Take this and drink. This is my blood. Do this in memory of me.”
Catholics believe this was the First Eucharist, that through a miracle the bread and wine actually became the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
Catholics reenact the Last Supper during every Mass, where God, acting through the priest, changes the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
This is a great sacrament of thanksgiving and unity of Catholics.
By the way, the Orthodox, Lutheran and many Anglican Churches also believe in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 1322 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt2sect2chpt1art3.htm
With love in Christ.

You, sweetie, are either incredibly dense or so incredibly blinded by your prejudice that you cannot even see words on a page unless they line up with what you believe.
But okay. One more time. Exactly as you requested.
No. I do not bow down before a "wafer".
I genuflect, or kneel, or bow, in the presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
Now please do everyone a favor and go evangelize someone who really needs to know the Lord. Hint: That would not be Catholics. I'm a former evangelical fundamentalist who converted (thanks be to God) so I know what you're up to ... and tell your pastor it does not work.

We do not worship the wafer but what Christ says it is which is His Body. We believe in His miracles and discern His Body as St. Paul instructed.

Lutherans also bow. No, we do not worship the wafer; we worship Jesus in the wafer, because He said "this is My body." The wafer would just be a wafer, were it not for His promise.

Catholics believe that when the wafer is blessed it undergoes transubstantiation and becomes the body of Christ. They do this because Jesus said "Do this in memory of me", and when it was the Last Supper he did not say "This is a symbol of my body and blood" he said "This is my body" "this is my blood"
That is the reason as I know it

The Church would desire to be totally a non secular authority. confident, that does propose secular remember would desire to be commented/activism on, yet no longer run via the Church. Jesus placed adult adult males in value of his Church as a results of him no longer staying. "as a results of fact the father has despatched me, i'm sending you." John 20:21. adult adult males [a million] "all have sinned and fall in need of the honor of God" Romans 3:23. Jesus stated there could be the two solid and undesirable contributors interior the Church (John 6:70), and not each and every of the contributors could pass to heaven (Matt. 7:21–23). Jesus stated wrongs would be devoted via the adult adult males interior the Church. "I inform you the certainty, in spite of you bind on earth would be sure in heaven, and in spite of you unfastened on earth would be loosed in heaven." (Mathew 18:18 [2]) is the flexibility those adult adult males[a million] evaluate themselves to have held. Jesus promised to lead his Church into all fact (John sixteen:12–13,Matt. sixteen:18). [3] So thinking the craptacular Popes, Clergy the Catholic Church has had [a million] and the flexibility they have self assurance they held [2] and the secular wrongs devoted, the certainty that no ex-cadre has ever been retracked, changed or abused and that the Catholic Church has preached an identical faith for 2000 years is the two as a results of success, random occurrence or [3]. i think its [3], guy ingenuity can't account for this and the certainty that there are 38 000 diverse Protestant denominations leads me to have self assurance in [3] using in basic terms sola scriptura and background.

suzi, based up upon your history of questions i find it hard to comprehend that yu really want an answer however.... when i go to communion - i am in full communion with my Lord. i am participating in His greatest sacrafice and acknowledging that sacrafice. when i bow down - i actually geneflect, others fully kneel, we are doing so in woship of our Lord and Saviour. when you stand before the Lord what will you do - will you sing hallelujah will be be able to speak at all - can you imagine..... great song and i cry everytime when i think of standing before my Lord. when i proceed to communion and bow before my Lord and then smile and welcome HIm into my heart once again.
that is why, you can call this a dance becuase unless we say exactly what you want - you call it dancing. we speak different languages suzi and until you understand we are all speaking of the same Lord & God our Saviour Jesus Christ - you will never fully comprehend the love of God - He loved us all - Gentiles, Jews, Samaratins - you name it - all were different and yet had the same belief. until we all work together, the Kingdom of God will not take over.
