I retired from the US Army at 42 with 21 years and found it to be great. Have been retired 32 years now and highly recommend it to those that can qualify. It is not about being so tough, but about doing a job well. Most people really do their best. You should be able to find a job that you really enjoy.
You should go active and not reserve or national guard because the retirement is really much better. Guard and reserve can only earn 50 points (days) per year so it would take 7.3 years to earn one years retirement at 2.5% per year and retirement at age 60. Active duty retirement can be at 20 years.

apples & bananas bro, no matter who you ask both sides of the branch will arguing whos better.
The Army has more Career opportunities/The Marines are a more rounded fighting unit than the Army(every marine is a rifleman).
Both have SOF's, that are good at what they do, and they are niether better or worst than each other(because they conduct different specialized operations).
Me personaly I would go Navy SEAL, I'm going to BUD/s as soon as I'm done with this last semester of college.

Different Uniforms same Flag.
As a retired Army Sergeant First Class I will tell you there is nothing wrong with being a Marine, But I will also tell you there are more opportunities for different jobs in the Army.
It all boils down to what job you want to do. both have their Bad asses. Both have their job to do, Both help keep the USA the home of the free and the brave.

Marines but promotions are very slow compared to the Army since the Marines are a much smaller force and Marines are highly dedicated to their job so you have very few leaving the Marine Corps and they stay in longer especially when they get to be E-6 or above. That means if E-7s or above don't leave or retire then it affects people in the lower ranks that want to move up since there are no spots available.
Army is bigger with a lot more jobs and fields to go into and a lot more opportunities for promotion and moving up but it has less prestige than the Marine Corps.

The Marines are the bad asses of the Military, the best of the best. But the Army is the backbone of the Military, without either we wouldn't be where we are today.

I would go with whom ever can offer you the job that you want. Because in all honesty after boot camp, its just a job. And nobody want to be at a job they hate. Do some research into what you might want to do in the military and find our which branch offers that job.

MARINES: The least intelligent of the military, but the branch with the biggest brawn. Fewer job opportunities, but way more motivated about those jobs.
ARMY: The widest range of intelligence, second behind Marines for brawn. More job opportunities, and not super brainwashed.
