Matt Kennseth. In 2003 I think. I think Kurt Busch won the first Nextel Cup the following year.

It was Matt Kenseth, and he was the entire reason NASCAR instituted the Chase. In essence, it was NASCAR's way of telling Kenseth that he didn't deserve to win the championship. You know, kind of like changing the number of drivers in the Chase after Tony Stewart missed it by a small margin was NASCAR's way of telling Tony he was number one (with the wrong finger).
Not only did he have the championship sewn up with seven races to go (as one person pointed out), but he won the championship without winning a single race.
*begin sarcasm*
FORBID the driver that had the most consistent season wins the championship. It must be the one who wins the most. And we MUST make sure Junior wins a championship before some other...no name driver...wins a championship!
Just like we need to put in a rule making sure that Jeff Gordon doesn't get left out of a race because he didn't qualify well! Oh, and we gotta change the way the car looks so we can draw in those teenagers who are all into those foreign tuner cars! We'll make a couple safety changes, too, so we can say it's to protect the drivers, and hide our ulterior motive.
*end sarcasm*
If you can't tell, I don't like a lot of the changes that NASCAR's made lately.

It was Matt Kenseth, who had the title clinched with seven races to go in the season. NASCAR thought that people would stop watching if they knew who the champion would be that early in the season, so they implemented the Chase the next year. I think it was a slap in the face to Matt, personally.

Matt Kenseth in 2003, and the steady boring way it happened with several races to go and wrapped up so no one else was even in contention although Matt only had one win, contributed to the "chase" format they use now.
