I know someone who is an incest survivor. She ran away from home (she was 21 at the time), and the last year has been hell. She's been living with me and she has a good job, but her family has recently disowned her, and now she can't get any of her documents (birth certificate, etc). I need to find resources to help her so that she can move on.

Can you help?

**I should mention that she was disowned by her adopted family, who won't release any information to her about her biological parents. In fact, her adoption was a closed adoption, which means there is no information given about her real family. And she's never actually seen her birth certificate.

Other than psychological counseling, there is nothing you can do for the emotional and/or physical trauma she has sustained.

For getting the documentation she needs, she just needs to call the records office for the county she was born in for a certified copy of her birth certificate. They will be able to help her. She can get a new SS card from the Social Security Administration.

**Edit** If she was adopted, she needs to contact the adoption agency, if she knows which was used. She would need her parents' names to get a copy of the certificate in the way I stated. Contacting RAIN is also a good way to help her out. And she may need to talk to a lawyer.

You might try the local battered women's shelter for additional resources for her. While they may not deal exclusively with incest, surely they will have resources they can direct you to. I'm also sure that there are tons of support groups for people in her situation, especially online communities. So, do a google for "incest survivor support groups" and see what turns up.

Your friend is very lucky to have you to help her. Good luck. I'll be praying for both of you.

Contact RAINN -- the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network.

Also, if she has a job, she must have a social security card. If she graduated high school, then she has a diploma. If she takes her social security card and high school diploma to the Department of Motor Vehicles, she can get a photo ID. And if she gets a photo ID, she can get a copy of any of her documents.

Her birth certificate wouldn't have been filed until she was named and either given to her adoptive parents or named a ward of the state.

If she is 21, she should be able to get her documents from the County Recorder/Registrar in the county she was born. No one can stop her from getting that...

The local hospital has a mental health outpatient clinic.
Or there may be a women's shelter outreach program.
She left it a little late for Children's Services/Aid.
Start there for consellors.
