Us Canadians don't actually say "eh" that much, it's a stereotype. Sure we do say it, but it's kind of been blown out of proportions, like the "Canadians live in Igloos!". We don't live in Igloos.

As for where "eh" came from, one theory is that it came from "ey", the way native French stereotypically say "hey".

"eh" is a tag question in Canadian English. It is a way to ask confirmation of what the person has previously said, at least in part. You can do something similar with "yes?", "no?" or "huh?"

That doesn't even apply to all Canadians. It is a localized idiom as is the American usage of the word "like".

haha i dont know why!! i dont even notice when i do


i heard its becuase we are polite so the eh lets the other person state their opinion. for example one person say its cold out eh? and then the other replies yea it is. whereas is someone said its cold out, its not so open for discussion

its just a local language and it depends on background and education
