I received a pretty tantalizing scholarship from Tulane.

I'm not a partier, however.

excuse me it is people like your first answerer that give La a bad reputation!(sorry when the I read the question someone had made a horrid remark about New Orleans when I sumitted it they had withdrawn the comment) When you answer something on here you should at least know what the h#ll your talking about...gosh I can't stand idiots!
OK New Orleans is a traditional community. It is a mixture of races. There is the beautiful Garden District where the "elite" live the arts and humanitarian areas and of course like any other city the poor and middle class mixed in. It's a beautiful city full of culture and class. There are many stars that make New Orleans their home. There are places open 24/7 and places that are just open in the day or night. Since Katrina the housing situation is dire with rents starting in the 700 dollar range and above. The infrastructure still isn't as strong as it used to be and the crime rate is huge! The medical facilities are still in dire straights as well
Tulane is still a class a school with lots of great amenities.A graduate there can expect to make a lot of money from it's fantastic education.
Since it is a rebuilding town you can expect to see all kinds of races and traditions there. It's not unusual to see a funeral parade on any given day or see tourists staggering down the streets decked out in beads carrying plastic glasses filled with beer. Tourism is the number one money maker for the city and now that so many of the hotels have been rebuilt or renovated the tourists are back.
Even tho the crime rates have risen the community refuses to let this trend stop them. Neighborhoods are banding together to get rid of the crime and drugs.
Foods are plentiful there in a varity of tastes and spices. Many cultural dishes are specilities. You'll enjoy living in the city and experiencing the uniquiness of it

New Orleans does have a very unique culture and Tulane is a school that exemplifies it. Because the school is located in NO there will always be the groups of students attracted to the party lifestyle, but that is not the only thing about the school and campus.

It is a diverse campus and there are plenty of opportunities there. However, as a Tulane alum I'll fill you in on a bit of things not mentioned by other posters:

1. The campus is nice and in a classy part of town. However, NO goes from nice to terrible quickly and at least when I was there, the crime rate on campus was through the roof. I know people will argue against me but facts don't lie. While I was there my car was broken into twice on campus, a campus cop was killed (although by a NJ student, not a NO resident), the police director was nearly attacked in her apartment, a student was shot directly by campus and on more than one occasion students were robbed at gunpoint while waiting on the trolley.
2. Contrary to belief, the school's name doesn't mean a whole lot. Yes, it is more academic than LSU or a state school but the name "Tulane" will not have people knocking down your door. Plus, post Katrina they did close quite a few programs down. I am sure that some have returned, but the school has lost much of what it once was (not to mention the unique Tulane-Newcomb College structure, which was phased out).
3. The offers there are tantalizing. The reason is that they overcharge so much for tuition. I received a tantalizing offer as well. A decade later, even with that offer, I owe as much in student loans as a new car would cost.

Don't get me wrong, Tulane is a good school and New Orleans does have some positive aspects, but there are two sides to every story.

Take it and come on down! Tulane is a great school, I almost went there myself. Plus, if you want a class that isn't offered there, you can check Xavier or Loyola Universities, and take the class there for no additional charge. And you are not required to party. The city has a lot of fun stuff to do, and you will get "Freshman 50" instead of 15 because the food is so good. Yes, the crime rate is a bit daunting, but use your common sense and you should be OK. Tulane is in a better neighborhood than most in NOLA. The rent in that area is a little high, but if you live in the dorms it is not an issue for you. NOLA is a quick one hour drive to Mississippi, and you can go to the beach here (even though it's not as great as Florida.) I say come on down. It's gonna be 80 and sunny today!

What isn't the culture of New Orleans?

Recently, I took a trip to the French Quarter (I went to the House of Blues to see Hanson.... I'm a dork, I know, lol). Anyways, we parked at the Hard Rock cafe, and as I was walking down the street, there were two men playing a Jamaican sounding song with a box up for some cash.. I donated, lol. Then, a few minutes later, a small parade went through the streets. Then, I turned down Decatur St., and there were pubs, Italian restaurants, clothing stores... basically, if you can think of it, its probably in New Orleans.

Congratulations on your scholarship! And you don't have to be a big partier. Go out on occasion, but its not like its mandatory! Be sure to get out of New Orleans occasionally, though, just to see what's beyond. I recommend going south, lol (I'm a Houma native, but New Orleans feels like home).

New orleans is a mixture of a culture. It is the Creole state where fun is open 24/7 and The food is the most exqizit food you will taste. There is crime everywhere like all other cities. Tulane is a nice beautifull college and has all great amenties and is all around all the latest shop. If you are more of a starbucks person who like to read book surrounded by a garden and nice weath you will like that college. I live here all my life and I'm in my 2nd year in college. I love it here.If you need anything else to know more about just hit me up at dixon2140@yahoo.com

New Orleans is like no other city .. Its an amazing city with an amazing culture.

We have our own language *cajun* .. our own food *cajun and creole* .. own music and dance *cajun and zydeco* also alot of jazz .. own traditions and festivals.. .. beautiful architecture .. great folklore and hauntings.. people are friendly .. we're a very festive city and everyone feels like family. Nola is almost like another country in its self. You will quickly learn the pronunciation and meaning of many Cajun vocabulary from the frequent use in our slang .. music.. and street signs

Theres something for everyone in New Orleans.. whether you enjoy the party scene .. or if you are more mellow .. the entertainment is endless

as for Tulane .. I dont know much about the school myself .. but I do hear nothing but good.

Congratulations! Take that scholarship! Tulane's an excellent school. And if you're going into a medical field, you know that Tulane's reputation is exceptional.

The culture is pretty diverse. You are sure to make friends and find your own place to "fit in". Tulane is in one of the nicer, prettier spots in the city, too.

As for renting a room, try looking for a roomie or three to share a house or apartment with and split the rent. Rents are high in NOLA, but if you split it up four or five ways, a nice house can be rented that's affordable.
