If you paid with a check you may be able to use your cancelled check as proof of payment.
If you used a credit card, you can also request a copy of the credit card receipt and use it as proof.
Otherwise you will be paying the fine.

The DMV should have a record of registering the VEHICLE. However, in many states, the charge is failure to DISPLAY a valid registration sticker. Paying for the new registration is NOT a defense if the sticker is not displayed.

Pay the ticket and get a new registration sticker ASAP. Many states will charge an additional few to replace the sticker.

If the expired ones where on the window when the ticket was issued, you pay the ticket.
