If you've left a town with say unpaid bills for example some companies will list the debt on a bad debts register which would be national for each state in the case of say America.
Look in a phone book to track down the database contact details and see if you're listed on there. If you are it will give you the chance to clear your debt thereby restoring your credit rating. There may be several different databases so check them all.

The best place to go is www.annualcreditreport.com the reason for that is that all three credit bureaus converge at that sight and you can obtain all three reports there. It is important that you obtain all three. Not all creditors will report to all of them, so in order to get the full picture you have to get all three, there is Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. Once you have pulled them (it is free to get this information once a year-- pick something that happens once a year as a reminder so that you do it every year-- like a birthday or anniversary) you can contact a budget counseling agency or a credit counseling agency to help you go over it. Look for one that is non profit or free.

Go to www.Experian.com, if you're overdue somewhere it'll be there.
If you pay a fee for all three credit bureaus, they'll e-mail you if there's ANY change, such as new accounts (that you may not have opened), etc.
