there is irc too, which is safer from viruses, law enforcement, and with higher download speeds but no-one who is a limewire user would know how to use it to download files.

Frostwire carries with it the same risks as any other filesharing network. If you're using Microsoft Windows, then you're a big target because that's what most of the world uses. If you're using something super obscure/not so popular (ie. OSX) you'll probably be fine. I use Linux. It's a nice in-between.
