I don't know of any safe way for a single dog house. Space heaters can be used with a walk-in kennel where they can be placed away from the dog. The only thing I can think of is additional dogs (as space permits).

The smaller the better, too (the only heat source is body heat). A wrap around windbreak is also a good idea.

I would suggest hay or cedar chips like you would use in a rat cage.

You can try heating pads if you dog doesn't dig/chew up his bedding. Or you could always put in some old bedding/comforter.

What type of dog are we talking about here? Where do you live to give an idea of the tempature you're dealing with?

Your house is already heated likely, why not just let the dog in the house?

They also make pads that will reflect the heat of the dog's body back to them. Try looking for those.

First of all, if you are going to let your dog sleep outside, it damn better have a nice, big house. I have a Siberian Husky, we build him a custom house that is resistant to rain, and keeps warm at nights.

Make your dog a custom house. Buy some plywood, shingles, warm carpeting and some instalation used in homes. Be creative, it's not that hard.

Lots and lots of straw which is very insulating, as well as a good flap over the doorway.

Straw. This is what we use in our dog houses. We are a 60 dog sled dog kennel and just as long as you keep it dry...change it when its wet your dog will be nice a toasty. Why not let him indoors?
