You are making an erroneous assumption Amanda. Not everyone says God doesn't exist. Many people believe in God, including me.

However, I have serious doubts about most organized and/or fundamentalist religion, since many (if not most) of the vilest crimes in history have been committed in the name of these religions.

I am mostly a tolerant person - but I have very little tolerance for people who believe only their religion is correct and people who believe everyone who follows any religion other than their own are going to burn in hell (or equivalent).

I am mostly a peaceful person - but I will fight anyone who wants to force their religion down the throat of others and anyone who wants to exterminate, torture or silence others because of religion.

I am a Christian, but I respect the right of other people to believe in Buddha, Tao, nature worship, Islam, Shinto, Hinduism, Judaism, to be an atheist or an agnostic, whatever. And I expect anyone with beliefs different from mine to respect my right to believe in Christ.

I truly believe that anyone who cannot manage tolerance has serious mental issues. Sadly, this appears to be a large percentage of the world's population.

P.S. - I don't have a denomination, I don't take everything in the Bible literally (I think lots of it is just history, not necessarily accurate history either, and that some of it was written by patriarchal crackpots - especially the racist, pro-slavery and anti-women bits), I don't think God is exactly who or what most people picture Him as (possibly not even a Him), I don't think that I've got it all right with how I imagine God is (I may be wrong about everything - I don't know), I don't go to church often, I don't watch religious programming - but I do pray.

For those who ask for proof of God, I think the whole of creation is proof of God (no I am NOT a creationist). I can also vouch from personal experience, although I guess that is subjective and I have no physical proof. I had a vision of Christ when I was 11, which I think saved me when I was in danger - and no, I was not drunk, was not taking drugs and am not mentally ill (ok, I do get depressed now and then, especially when I watch the news). He also gave me a little miracle once or twice (if any miracle can be called little). And when I ask for it, I get guidance - provided I listen. From reading history and various things posted on the web and talking to others, I don't think this is that uncommon. Most people just don't talk about it, especially with someone they don't trust or aren't close with.

I admit it is possible that everyone who has ever had a vision or received a sign or a miracle was deceiving themselves or being deceived by others, but is it probable?

The idea of god has become implausible to the intellectual world of today. I would agree with you that there is no proof either way. I might also add that being either a theist or an atheist, requires a leap of faith because of the lack of proof on either side. Most atheists refer to scientific knowledge as their basis for their beliefs and I do not blame them. Yet, they all must realize that scientific data IS subjective for the simple fact that not one scientist can be completely objective. The leap of faith for the atheists is in trusting that the scientists' have done their job and have completely considered everything concerning their experiments. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for science.

What we have here with the question of atheism vs. theism is a conflict in differing mythologies. I have personally stopped trying to prove either case. I have concluded that the idea of god is just that, an idea. I have no problem with god as an idea, because the idea of god was meant to lead an individual to an experience that is beyond any idea or set of ideas, to a transcendental experience which is as real as love and life and any other experience. People might try to disprove this experience by stating that it can be reduced to a chemical reaction in the body and brain and therefore reduce the experience to a delusion. The same could be said about our vision or our sense of smell or practically any other experience we have.

There is no proof that Santa or the Great Pumkin don't exist either. It is universally accepted that you don't prove that things don't exist, but if you say they exist, you have the burden of presenting proof.

Without evidence for God, or evidence that the Bible is a trustworthy source of information, and that it's wrong about many things i.e. Creation, the Flood, Exodus, the Tower of Bable, etc, why should I even consider believing in God over any othe god?

Firstly, not everybody does; some people are still sufficiently uneducated as to believe in such a thing. Secondly, there is no reason to believe in the existence of any sort of god: there is absolutely no evidence to support such a belief, and a fair amount which refutes it. Thirdly, it can be shown that a belief in a god is totally useless -- it can have no consequences in the real world, so it is a waste of time. See:

Everyone doesn't say that....80 per cent of Americians,,,say they beleive in God...I'm not sure what the number is for the whole world....

There is proof of God...but only those who are looking for the truth,,,can see it...Others are not looking for the truth, because once they admit they are a sinner,,they will have to do something about it,,and they are not ready and may never be....

Your faith is proof he doesnt exist!

If there was proof there was a God who existed, and created all things etc there would be no need to have faith as it would not be needed.

As people who believe in (a) God need faith, and faith is a keystone of all religions there cannot be a God becouse if there was you would not need faith as it would be a fact.

no one knows if God exists, he could, he might not.

there are things in life that make you think there is a God and thing that make you think there isn't one.

but in answer to 'prove to me he doesnt exist!' NOBODY can prove that. ABSOLUTELY NOBODY.

one interesting thing I once heard was;

look at your computer, how powerful it is, how complicated it is and everything it is capable of. Now ask yourself did this computer evolve from something or did somebody create it?

now look at youreself and see how so much more complex you are than a meer computer... do you think you just evolved and happened to work so perfectly? Or did someone design you?

And I'm sure an atheist could ask you, 'wheres your evidence that God does exist?' If you believe in God, thats fine. If someone else doesn't believe in God, why does it matter so much to you?

Respect other people's beliefs.

A lot of people say God doesn't exist because the 'hope' He doesn't! Others say it because they don't want to submit to anyone, including a 'higher power'. But just saying God doesn't exist, doesn't make it so. And deciding 'not to acknowledge and follow God's laws, doesn't mean that God takes His laws away. Just read about Nimrod in the Bible. He tried that, even turned thousands against God, and they all decided they were the 'Captain of their soul'. They followed Nimrod, built the Tower of Babel, God let them live in their sin for awhile - then God 'showed' all of them that He is still around. God brought the Tower down and confused the languages...... they had a 'real' wakeup call!
.......God exists! Point: Don't put God to the test!
