Home cooked or raw diets are the best for a pet. You know exactly what goes into the dog's stomach without all the fat, fillers, preservatives and who knows what else. You do need to study about canine nutrition. I suggest a nutrition group that you can join on Yahoo. Thousands of dog owners feed home cooked diets and supplements and the dogs are healthier for it.
You can get some good information on diet and supplements from this website: www.b-naturals.com

Yeah, it is confusing the amount of different opinions people have about pet nutrition. This is why you should really only stick to veterinary advice.
There are many different types of dog food, and not all are great. Generally cheap crud that you buy in supermarkets is not going to be the best quality - although certainly dogs can do fine on it.
High quality dog foods are the best thing to feed a dog. Although it is possible to feed a raw diet, it's hard to get right - you have to do a lot of research in to what levels of nutrients are appropriate for your dog depending on what age and size it is, and then you have to find out which foods contain these. Generally you have to feed a mixture of muscle meat and offal.
This is why dog food was invented in the first place. The majority of people have neither the time nor the knowledge required to select the right foods for their dog - which is why some knowledgeable people at nutrition companies took it upon themselves to formulate Complete Pet Foods - i.e foods that contain the appropriate levels of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, in a handy can or bag. People seem to be turning back to raw diets these days - for good or bad - but already, you can by raw diets pre-prepared that you can put in your freezer. Dog foods are already evolving again, starting from basics!
And for the record, a HIGH QUALITY dry dog food is just as good as a HIGH QUALITY canned food, and certainly better than a low quality canned food. The only difference with dry food is that it doesn't have water in it - which is why a bowl of fresh water should always be available so your dog can get his required level of the most important nutrient of all - water.
Does that answer your question?

Commercial dog foods have everything nutritionally that a dog needs by law. Anything else is a personal opinion based on a lot of unsubstantiated information so must be taken with a grain of salt. Cooked human food is fine for a dog but one has to find a good recipe and follow it EXACTLY or nutrition will be incomplete.

I wouldn't feed canned food, but there are excellent dry kibble available (not from a grocery store, though). Do a search for the top 10 dog foods and you will see. If you are going to feed meat and veggies from home, research this, too. Dogs need many of the vitamins and nutrients that aren't fed from home recipes and cause damage to their bodies by neglecting them of these needed supplements. Sure, if done right, home cooking is an excellent, healthy alternative to kibble!

Raw meat is good for dogs, many dogs thrive on a raw diet. It includes meat, organs, bone, etc. (Do some research on this if you choose to feed raw, you need to make sure you're feeding the right amounts of the right things.)
Fresh veggies and fine for dogs, although they don't get much nutrition from them unless pulverized, they make handy low-calorie treats.
Or go with a high-quality kibble. (No fillers, dyes, mystery meats, byproducts, no grain in the first several ingredients, etc.) People seem to think that dog food is some sort of magical thing. But actually, the ingredients in dog food are "human foods"; meat, vegetables, grain, etc.

Dogs are NOT carnivores, they are omnivores. With that said, when people speak against commercial dry and canned food what they are referring to are the one COMMERCIALLY available. When you read these journals, most of the studies are based on commercial dry and canned food.
So what are the brands commercially available? These brands are the ones that are readily available in your nearest grocery or pet stores (i.e. science diet, eukanuba, iams, pedigree, hills, etc). Responsible dog owners would NOT get these commercial brands because responsible owners would read the ingredients and do research themselves.
RAW diet and home cooked meals (recipes for dogs) are good. The people who do this for their dogs have the luxury of extra time in their hands. Cheers to you guys! However, some people like me, who don't have much time to prepare these types of food would rather get good quality dry or canned food such as Innova, Canidae, Solid Gold, etc. Its just a matter of time and preference.

Since the scare about pet foods earlier this year, alot of owners have elected to make their dogs food.
I had dogs that were 18 yrs old I made their food in a food processor.Frozen peas, carrots(thawed) mixed with cooked Chicken,Turkey,or Ground Beef (degreased) Rice and then blend. All did very well on this diet. My DVM agreed.

Meat fruit and vegetables are fine.. People food as in.. Bacon, or potato chips, hot dogs are BAD, or some people will say that they feed their dogs cold meat, other procssed or preserved foods.. All those things that we as people shouldn't even be eating, those things are not good for dogs.
Like you wouldn't feed your kid Kraft dinner and hot dogs, you wouldn't feed your dog the same type crap..

I think dogs are Meat eaters. My 15 year old only eats beef liver & boiled chicken; he won't eat vegs. Anyway, the bad part of eating people food, to my opinion, is having to have their teeth cleaned more often. Mi;ne won't eat canned dog food, but will eat canned cat food; the cats likes the canned dog food. Funny, huh?

I don't think there is anything wrong with commercial dog foods, if you do your homework and get one with higher quality ingredients, less fillers and grains. Dogs are a carnivore they do not need veggies like we do. They do need more meat proteins and other nutrients though. You don't see wild dogs digging up roots and veggies to eat, they hunt other animals to eat. Canned dog food is ok in moderation but should be fed along with dry food as too much can cause tooth decay.
