Why would the Enochian angels refer to themselves with masculine names, but appear in physical form as feminine? Why this seeming contradiction?

the enochian angels were messengers of a transcendent world where sexuality did not follow the simple binary contradictions we are familiar with from this existence.

the way they seemed to subsume both male and female identity in themselves was only because dee and kelly failed to fully comprehend how each angel contained all sexes.

that the angels transcended ordinary human sexuality is finally evidenced by the way that they insisted dee and kelly change partners as a way to enlightenment in 1587.

i don't know what nightwind has been reading but seventeenth century angels were considered neuter in gender. dr. john donne calls an angel 'it' in his poem 'air and angels'.

It's a common concept in Western mysticism. Masculine seeming things tend to be "physically" feminine. This comes mostly from the idea in The bible about Man being the wife of God- that is God is purely spiritual, thus male. Man is physical, therefore feminine.

To expand on the idea, spiritually, Women are positive [active] men are negative [passive]. Though, exceptions abound- for instance Yechidnah is feminine,

It's pretty much a quagmire.

Yes.

Edit: What specifically are you referring to? Dee claimed at least one of the angels he conversed with was female....He got a lot of flack for it, because traditional theology of the time stated that angels had to be male, that one in female form must be a demon in disguise (but its really a lousy disguise in that case, isn't it?)

Where does it say all the angels are female? I'm not familiar with the claim.
