Most service dog agencies estimate the cost of a dog about 600 to 800 a year. It sounds about right to me. Around 300 a year for food ($25 a month) and another 300 to 400 a year for vet bills. Their vet quote may be a little low cause I think I spend around 100 a year for heartguard and I flea/tick preventive is around 40 for 3 months. I only use flea/tick preventive when I see them on the dog when I'm bathing (every 4 weeks). So it may really be closer to 1000 a year.

About $1,200 per year for a healthy medium sized dog... if your dog lives to be 15 years old, that would be $18,000 total.
If your dog is sickly or winds up needing an operation, you'll have to save up more.
But the money you'll be spending on your dog is not really important, compared to the joy of having a canine best friend.

Depends if it is lucky in health, if you are a spoiler (with treats and toys), and how long it lives. Good food might be $20/mo. Vet will be hundred(s) per year.
No matter what, it is cheaper than a child! (braces, car, college)
I have 6 and I think I'm keeping up as if they were children...
