I wanted to know if there is a way to get around the 60 college credit requirement to join the NYPD. I already passed the entrance exam. But when I got to the police academy they said I still needed 60 college credits! I have completed only six college credits. I am out of money so I can't pay for college right now. And the last thing I need is more loans. So is there a way I can take some kind of test to get more college credits or something? I have a clean criminal record. I have a clean driver’s license; I am born and raised in NYC! I really want to be a police officer, but this 60 college credit requirement is really standing in my way. I want to be a cop so I can help and protect people. What can I do? I have a family so money is really tight. I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Best way: Sign up with either Thomas Edison State College or Charter Oak State College and bang out some CLEP tests.

CLEP tests are college equivalency exams. If you pass them, TESC or COSC will give you credit. Unlike other schools, these two have NO cap on testing credits.

If you don't have 2 years of college yet, think about this: The Hope credit gives you $1,000 back for your first $1,000 of qualified educational expenses, and another $500 back on your second $1,000. That's like a 75% scholarship.

Yes, they're both regionally accredited. Yes, I have degrees from each of them.

I would recommend a degree in a business related field, it will give you an advantage over other officers and if you decide you don't want to be a cop you have something else to fall back on. You will learn everything you need to know in the police academy so criminal justice is kind of redundant. If you ever think you might want to try federal law enforcement after a couple years in NYPD I would recommend a degree in accounting or minoring in a language.

Go to www.collegeboard.com for details of the CLEP exam.

Also google DANTES. This is a military program that is open to non-military now.

These sites will not get you all the way but they will get rid of a lot of general education credits relatively cheaply. If it needs to be turned into an associates degree, may I suggest you look at www.tesc.edu This is the website of Thomas Edison State College, who are supported by the state of NJ. They are an online college and accept any college level credit. My wife and I are both students there. You could do credit by examination with CLEP and DANTES and finish off with a few classes.

Good luck. I feel for you.

Huh, my sister is in NYC and her husband is an NYPD officer and he didn't go to college... but he has been a NYPD officer for about 9 years now. Try calling around to different people with the academy, or the PBA rep office.

You can apply at a Police Department that does not have the 60 college credit requirement.

If there was a way around that, don't you think they would have told you? They need people.
