You are supposed to do both. Tell your boss and then hand him (or her) your official letter of resignation.

Depends on the job. Some employers have to give you a letter to fire you (plus they're spineless to not talk to you). If you are in a larger company, start with a letter. But if you're in a smaller company, talking to the boss is ok. They may or may not ask for a letter.

My suggestion would to do it in person and give them a letter of resignation at that time. In your letter be polite, you don't want to burn your bridges behind you.

Dearie, it's best to write out a letter and present it in person. In this way you have a record, they have a record, and they can't claim "you never gave proper notice."
If you just do the letter, it is extremely cold.
Have a nice day!

In a letter and keep copies in case some where in the future they try to claim they fired you. This could be important if you're applying for another job. Keep it polite and business like.

Give them a letter in person. Doing it only through writing seems cowardly.

depends on the boss, however they will need a written letter or recommendation at some point--for legal reason--they need your signature and reason for leaving...i would suggest handing a letter in person.

A letter is imperative......save a copy for yourself to prove that you gave notice and when. I also do it in person, but it may be dependent on the size of the company or business.

I always do both. That way they can't come back and say you didn't give notice. Make sure to date teh letter adn either tell them on the same day or close to it.
