whats better sram or shimano derailleurs?

I assume you're just referring to rear derailleurs. Here's my pick In order: Shimano XT Shadow, Sram X.9, Sram X.7, Shimano XT 760, and the Shimano Deore LX isn't bad either. I just picked up one of those mid-cage LX rears for an urban rig for $39 from www.cambriabike.com The spring tension on them is actually impressive these days.

The XT Shadow is the new cat's meow for rough landings without a chainguide up front. You could also drop $140 on a Saint/Rhinolyte wheelset AND Saint derailleur from www.jensonusa.com if you're willing to accept the restrictions of the Saint/Hope products. It's a super deal.

Aside from the brand new XT Shadow, Sram's rear derailleurs kick Shimano's butt hands down. The straight-on cable routing was an EXCELLENT idea (Shimano copied that on the Shadow), and the pivots and limit screws are better designed. If you find an '05 or '06 Sram rear, steer clear of that and get a newer one.....they had some breakage issues at the knuckle that are apparently fixed now. Shimano is a great product, too, but Sram improved things drastically.

SRAM.

In computer terms, Shimano a Microsoft, SRAM are Mac. The SRAM is more expensive, but are more reliable shifters (The 2:1 pull ratio helps to clean the cables, as opposed to Shimano who use a 1:1)

Go for the SRAM trigger X.0 shifters for the rear and connect to a Shimano XT front for a cool combination----this way you get the best of both worlds!

My opinion is Shimano, their company is more trusted, they get more sponsers than Sram. I've been using Shimano parts for a decade. No problems so far.
