To become bulkier you should work about 2 - 3 times a week. But during the days you aren't exercising should you drink protein shakes? Because you aren't working out?

sorry but you are using the wrong technique if you are working out 2-3 times a week to bulk up. STATIC CONTRACTIONS go google it, you only need to work out for up to 15 minutes every 2-3 WEEKS. Much easier and you'll bulk up faster and become much stronger than your contemporaries. No you don't need protein shakes either, eat sensibly and get plenty of fluids and rest properly.

gaining muscle mass is all about the diet. progressive resistance only stimulates the muscles and central nervous system. your diet ultimately determines the size of your body and the body composition (amount of fat and muscle). the key to gaining weight is to consume sufficient calories every 3-4 hours day in and day out. it doesn't matter if it's a training day or recovery day, as muscle protein synthesis is at it's highest around 24-36 hours after exercise. so in terms of nutrition rest days are just as important.

in the iron game the diet is what separates the men from the boys. going to the gym and lifting heavy weights is easy. gaining muscle mass is 80% diet, 10% training and 10% supplements. eating 5-7 home cooked meals for years on end is not easy.

yeah you should because those are resting days, and you definitely need protein for your body to repair your muscles even on days you don't work out. Because your muscles don't recover an hour after working out. On rest days especially, you need to give the body all the protein it can get...... chicken =)
