E-4 is better than E-3. 'Course, E-5 is better than E-4, and E-6 is better than E-5.

The advantages of moving up in rank is better pay, more responsibility.

I never saw a disadvantage to promotion.

Contrary to the post above me, E-4 in the Army is typically NOT an NCO.

E-4 (Specialist) is the rank in the Army with the most members. It is the highest rank possible to achieve with just time in service. At that rank, you are held in a higher regard than all of the privates (E-1 through E-3) and are expected to know a little about what you are doing, but as a non-NCO, you are still grouped with the privates, generally. So while being a Specialist is a step up from being a Private, it is still not the rank to sit on for a long time.

Promotion to Corporal (A lateral promotion- they have the same paygrade) is not very common, but is done. This is when a Specialist is doing the job of a Sergeant but has not been to the promotion board yet. In this case, the Corporal will not be grouped with the privates, but will be grouped with the Sergeants, though the Corporal will have the least respect and say when with other NCO's.

In either case, E-4 is definately the best of the initial ranks, and is a great rank to get to, but it is also the best rank to get promoted FROM because the step from Specialist to Sergeant is much bigger than PFC to Specialist.

The Army rank of E-4 (Specialist or Corporal) is the fourth highest rank on a scale that goes up to E-9. It entails higher pay and responsibility than ranks E-1 to E-3, but not as much as an E-5. It's all a scale - one can make E-4 in the first enlistment, but the higher, better paid and more responsible ranks take longer.

In the Navy, there are often E-3 and below working parties (to load supplies and such). An E-4 doesn't have to participate in those.

It's all how you look at it. Becoming an E4 from an E3 is good because you are moving up in the ranks. Becoming E4 from and E5 is not good. Means you ****** up somewhere-

No real advantages or disadvantages other the pay differences between ranks etc. Responsibilites might be expected more out of an E4 then below. But not much.

Mustang is partially right. You can't go in as an E-4 unless you have a degree. Depending on how much college and ROTC you have, you can go in as E-2, E-3 or sometimes E-4. You can't pick if you'll be a Corporal or a Specialist and you most certainly will not be a Corporal in Basic as they are considerred NCOs. For the average Joe, most are Privates in some form or fasion and you'll make rank when you get to your unit after AIT. I didn't have many but there were some Specialists in Basic with me. As for Officer, you can't rank up to Officer. You have to go to OCS or go to ROTC in college. Those are the only ways to make Officer. If you stay an enlisted, though, you will make it up the ranks as far as Sergeant Major (E-9)

E-4 means you're wither a corporal (two hard stripes) or you're a specialist at the same level (E-4), a specialist meaning anything from a "pen-pusher" to some other sort of support personnel. If you want to make a career out of the Army, then you're on your way.

Specialist is a great rank, usually, you get paid better than a PFC or below and you usually have the responsibilities of a PFC or below. Then again, if your crew or squad is without an NCO, the Specialist shoulders the responsibility without benefit of the training and experience the NCO has.

You are officially an NCO in training E4's are either preparing themselves on becoming leaders mentoring lower ranked soldiers & leaning their jobs better or "shammers" doing nothing but passing shitty details given to you on to a lower ranking soldier (E3's & below)
