Actually, they don't get rid of them. They are put into your medical record. They can be used in the future to compare changes and track progression of certain issues.

You can always request a copy and most offices will provide them to you, possibly for a minimal charge.

No they keep them for at least 10 years as with all medical records. Most hospitals are switching to computerised x rays only.

I think they are stored in the hospital records until no longer required (Your dead) but our local hospital is no longer using xray plates they are putting the image straight on to a computer and will print a picture if required.

They are kept for ten years, and then because like all black and white negatives and prints are re-cycled because of their silver content.
