I recently just got my dog spayed about 3 weeks ago and she has been wanting to eat alot more and I have heard from three different friends that usually female dogs do gain alot of weight after they get fixed because of a hormone but then one person said that its un-true because as long as you keep your dog active .. she's not going to gain weight .. personal expierences would help. thank you in advanced.

Spaying is completely unrelated to weight gain in animals. Animals' dietary and exercise habits naturally change over time, but as long as you feed quality food and provide appropriate exercise, it shouldn't be a problem. My great dane's weight has not changed at all since spaying.

Their metabolism may change after they get spayed, but that does NOT mean your dog has to gain weight. The reason a dog gains weight is because they are consuming more calories than they are using during exercise. My dog is spayed, and she is in perfect physical condition. I feed her her daily calorie needs, and she gets a lot of exercise. I also take into account how many treats she gets during the day, because that is part of her daily calorie intake. If she gets a lot of treats in one day, like if I have a lot of family members over who feed her, she gets less food during her meal times. You can talk to your veterinarian about her weight, and ask them if they think she needs to lose weight, or if they think she is at a good weight. They can also help you with a plan to help her stay fit and trim.

Hi, i had my dog spayed at the age of 6 months, she is a Labrador cross and i thought to myself that type of dog puts on heaps of weight anyway..Bonnie is now 11 years old and she has put on weight but hay she still runs and chases balls.. also if you think your dog is hungry all the time and you keep giving food to her (depends on what you are giving her) she will not say no to it, my dog will eat what ever i give her.but than again im in control of her food not her, so it's up to you how much food you give her....also im sure you have wormed her,as you are aware that will make them hungry as well. Why not ask the vet? good luck and love her you wont regret it...

No, that is a myth that anti-spay and neuter people toss around to throw off ignorant pet owners.

Spaying your dog has nothing to do with her weight gain or loss.

If you maintain her diet and exercise in a healthy manner FOR LIFE, she will live a wonderful jolly life.

OMG, Freedom, SHUT UP! You have no clue what you are talking about if you dare to toss around that faulty pdf file! Why do you hate spaying and neutering so much? Why do you LOVE dog overpopulation?
Get off your high horse and stop spreading your lies.

my dog is neutered. Spaying a neutering slows metabolism a bit. Just don't feed as much, or give her more excesses. Only give her a certain amount per day, don't add on if she doesn't eat. Don't giver her more if she ate it all. I had a dog who got really fat because we didn't realize we fed her too much. She ate all her food fast and would have had more if it was up to her.

Just exercises and feed appropriately. My dogs really skinny and neutered. And way to go getting her spayed!! :)

We had trouble keeping weight ON our spayed German Shepherd. Now that she's 8 she's keeping weight on, but before, she was so active and the weight just wouldn't stay on. If your dog is active, she won't gain weight.

No, spaying does not cause dogs to gain weight. Overfeeding and too little exercise causes them to gain weight, same as people. Both of my dogs have gone through periods of being overweight, but neither one after being spayed at about 6 months.

If your dog was a good weight before surgery then continue to feeda nd treat as usual. Teh problem is some people feel gulty and over feed or over treat and that's what causes the weight gain
