my band would like do a small mini tour through ontario, and other east coast cities that are american. will we need working visas to play a few shows since we may make a profit from selling cds? i was only thinking around 4 or 5 shows. will this be a problem?

yes you will need a working visa/permit for that. here's an excerpt from the Immigration Department about performing artists:

Performing artists

Foreign artists coming to Canada to perform, as well as their essential support staff—the people that are integral to the performance—can work without a permit if they are only performing here for a limited period of time and will not be performing in a bar or restaurant.

If they will be performing in a bar or restaurant, performers and their staff each need a work permit.

Performing artists coming to work in Canada cannot enter into an employment relationship with the Canadian group that has contracted for their services. They must also not perform for the production of a movie, television or radio broadcast

Yes - if you plan to get paid (at any point) in your tour ... for either doing a show or for selling CDs.

No - if you're simply traveling around on vacation and playing your heart out in a local setting.

Individual work visas (including valid passports) would be required for each band member and all supporting staff traveling with the group.
