The cord from my external flash to my camera is only about a foot long; I want to get a hot shoe to tripod screw adapter so I can put this flash on a tripod, and thus will also need a longer cable. The cable connections don't seem to be universal. Where do I find a 6 to 12 foot cable to replace the small one that came with the flash unit. This is for an Olympus camera. My camera already has a built in flash but I want to use the remote as a bounce flash or slave flash, and not attach it to the camera hotshoe, but to a tripod instead Can this be done?

You might be better off buying an infra red trigger to mount on your camera rather than having really long cables everywhere. Try B&H. They are likely to have whatever you need.

There are many ways to achieve this. You can use the cheap chinese ebay triggers which are very inconsistent and for me have always cause intereference and trigger themselves. Then again they are only $20 each or something. You can also do via multiple Canon flashes which communicate through infrared, but if you only have line of site communication and in daylight tends to fail and not trigger. If you can afford it, I use Pocket Wizards. A combination of the FlexTT5 and the PlusII. We use remote triggers alot and we also need distance so this is our go to triggers. All depends on your needs though. -Moy Photography

Unless you use an Olympus cable or splice yours, you will lose TTL control. As the camera model is not supplied, your options are unknown. Slave shoes are a cheap alternative to do this. But again, as the camera is unknown which slave to get cannot be ascertained.
