A good friend of mine is going through a difficult period; many in his family and of his friends has had to return to Mexico the past week. Naturally, his family is in distress.

Because today is La Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), I was considering crafting a gift in honor of their family. My questions:

1. Is this proper practice?
2. If so, what should I consider making?

I know many of the common things associated with it, but I'd like another opinion for some guidance.

Thank you very much

Give your friend a small gift, take him out for a simple meal and drinks, ask him about his family - and let him talk talk talk. Drink a couple toasts to his and your deceased relatives.

He'll appreciate the effort and the caring ear!

I wouldn't do it because it's not tradition in our country. But if your friend means a lot to you, it would be a sweet gesture. Gifts are usually food or flowers for the dead. I have no idea what to give the living.

Make something very simple, like a card. (postcard or small picture). You can make it out of just about anything. Keep it simple.
Tell your friend how much you care for them.
I think that your friend will be touched by any gesture that you make, even a hug.

Many Mexicans are catholic. You could get some of those votive candles that are for that so they burn them in memory of the dead.
