A .223 is actually not that loud. But the bullet flys at speeds faster than sound, so the lot of sound is the supersonic boom. like from a jet. Also, the 223 round was made for fighting in the jungle. A single blade of grass can throw off the shot greatly, thats why it was so hard to aim a gun in 'nam, the bullets were made to hit grass and zig zag everywhere .

It varies due to barrel length like one of the above posters had mentioned. Rifles with shorter barrels are louder than the same caliber rifle with a logner barrel. The 270 should be louder but not necessarily as loud as you would think. A 223 pistol will give a rifle in 270 a run for its money in terms of loudness.
For those who don't believe the barrel length part, shoot a 22 rifle and a 22 pistol with the same brand and lot of ammuniton. Do so without hearing protection. You will notice the rifle isn't so bad but the pistol will leave your ears ringing. Since the ammo is the same, this will show that it is the barrel length that accounts for the difference.

Even a .22 LR has a decibel reading of 105 D The .223 because of it's higher speed and more powder will hit above that, probably in the 115 D area. Your ears will show damage on any prolonged noise over 85 D and when you get to the 100 D area you will have damage to your ears with the first shot. All guns will damage your ears and should be shot only with adequate ear and eye protection.

If you really want to know the actual sound levels go to the following website. They have a complete list of different gun calibers and how loud each one is in Decibel levels to the human ear. They list Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun Ammunition and the sound levels for EACH caliber....
NOTE** 223 and 270 caliber reports aren't as radically different as you think.....

The .223 is not as loud as a .270. I'd only shoot it without ear protection if you were outside hunting. If you plan on target shooting with a .223 wear ear protection.

It depends on the gun/barrel that it is coming out of. But compared to a 270 it's not nearly as loud. I usually don't even wear ear plus when shooting a 223.

It depends on barrel lenght, ammo, there are many different factors that would determine the loudness.

Both will damage your hearing, wear protection. Barrel length, powder used, etc. all make this too variable to answer.
