my dog continually itches herself. she had fleas, but we've taken care of them and i brush her and examine her skin regularly. i havent seen any fleas for awhile. however she has been itching and biting her hips and tail lately, to the point where her tail is covered in scabs! i have tried to put medication on them, and try to keep her from itching, but she still does it. i havent found fleas in forever, so i dont think its them. any ideas on a dog skin condition?

Purchase some "Apple Bitter" from the pet store. Spray some on the area every time you see your dog biting the area(s). It does not hurt the dog or irritate the skin. It really works.

One spray bottle is about 8.00

It is an allergy most likely to food. There is oatmeal shampoo that can help sooth the itch, but try a no grain food. Most often dogs develop an allergy to corn.My dog cannot eat food with any grain fillers. So I started making a special diet. But Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, Innova EVO, or Taste of the Wild Prairie are good possibilities.

Look, there are many many things that could be causing this. Mites, allergies to food or plants or grass or even dust, hormonal problems....How can anyone diagnose without even seeing the dog?

A flea allergy is still the most likely explanation - scabs around the back area are a classic sign. You might not see fleas, but if you haven't treated your house there's a distinct possibility they're still around - they may be jumping on your dog, biting her then dying, so you wouldn't see them - but if she's allergic it would be enough to make her crazy!

If your dog has scabs all over her, why would you be asking on the computer though? Why wouldn't you be asking a vet? At least pick up a phone to them!

My dog was severaly allergic to fleas, one bite and he would break out in hives. He was also allergic to corn ( I guess it's a lab thing), and various random other things. He went through a vicious cycle for awhile with the scabs. Just as it would be almost healed he would claw it back open again. I finally figured out that when the hair started growing back in it itched like crazy. I ended up putting a cone collar on him until his fur grew back. I gave him lots of extra attention and gentles massaged the area with a rubber curry comb brush and vitamn e- oil.
The clawing stopped once his hair was back in.

It could be an allergy to her food or something else that she has recently ingested. Have you recently changed brands? Or given a table food she hasn't had before? It could also be dermatitis, or even mange, which is highly contagious! You should definitely call the vet and arrange for an exam.

Hi,

My dog is a Shih Tzu, she had the same problem, she had a grass seed lodged in her skin; you have to take them to the vet ASAP and shouldnt cost more than $200 (Australian Dollars).

It could be an allergy. Have you brought her to the vet? Even something as simple as changing laundry detergents and fabric softeners to "free" (Free of perfumes and dyes) versions could help....Take her to the vet, it's really the best thing you could do to help her.

she could have some sort of allergy maybe to her food or if she lives outside. or maybe her skin is dry which causes itching. maybe you should take her to the vet because her scabs could get infected or worsen.

ITS FALL SO HER SKIN MIGHT BE DRY. I DONT KNOW WHAT YOU CAN TO FOR HER, BUT ASK YOUR VET.
