Positives:
Fuel
New tires
Adjustments to a bad handling car
Clean windshield
Repair a damaged car
Giving the driver something to drink
Negatives:
Losing your track position, especially if you pit under green
Chance of making a wrong adjustment
Chance for a pit road mishap either with another car or with your crew making mistakes.
Pitting under caution is different only in the sense that the pace car is controlling the speed of the cars on the track. You won't usually go a lap down pitting under a caution unless your car needs extensive repairs. Pitting under a green flag will cause you to lose at least one lap. Cars lose or gain positions pitting under caution depending upon how fast their stops are. Also, when you pit under caution there are usually two waves of stops. The first wave is the cars on the lead lap, and the second wave is the cars a lap down. Regardless of when you're pitting (under caution or green), you want your stop to be as fast as possible.
Hope that helps! Don't feel bad about being a new race fan.....we all were once in our lives!

The real risky times to make pit stops is when the races under green flag, the cars are at full speed. Because when a car comes into the pits it will take about 45 seconds up to a minute to slow down to pit road speed, make the pit stop, and then leave pit road. During that time of a car pitting all the other cars are still turning laps, therefore the car that pitted is behind until everyone else makes their way down to pit road and then pits.
However say your a driver and you are one of the first cars to make a pit stop under green flag, everyone is still on track making laps, if the yellow flag comes out then, the positions are locked. No cars are aloud to still pass each other. So now you are now locked a lap or two behind everyone else.
Then they will make their pit stops during caution flag and they all can stay on the same lap as each other because the pace car is leading all the cars around the track at a slow speed.
There are some race tracks that are about 2.5 miles in length and at those tracks cars can pit under green flag and they will make it back out on track without the other cars coming back around and put them a lap behind. Its the shorter tracks where pitting can be really risky although they have to pit, its just a matter of how soon or how long you can last until you pit.
I hope this makes a little sense, there are so many different scenarios that can happen during a race.

If you pit under caution, when everybody else does, you don't loose much in the way of track position. When you have to make a green flag pit, you will loose multiple positions and/or laps, depending on the size of the track. You have to pit to get fresh tires, gas, and make adjustments to your car. You also have to pit when you have a tire go down or wreck for tires or repairs.

Having an awesome pit crew and a smart strategy about when you pit and what you do with your pit stops cna make all the difference b/t winning and losing. I;ve seen good pit strategy (even the decision to stay out) helps Mears, Stewart, and Gordon.
On the other hand, all kinds of things can go wrong- see Hamlin, Shrub and Stewart for reference.

Like everyone else I agree.
One thing I would like to add.
If everyone is doing a green-flag ( usually when it's a long green run without a yellow, wreck debris etc.. happening is when green flag pit stops happen ). pit stop it will all cycle through and for the most part everybody will be back in the same spots after pits cycling.

positives fresh tires and fuel...strategy can also help position in places...down side losing position
pitting during a caution whoever goes in races out for position at the proper pit speed, and if anyone stayed out and was on the lead lap, they move up

hummm, let's see. Who receives the votes ? Who counts the votes ? Who may profit from the outcome ? Who takes the money from her sponsor to provide such biased promotion of a side show ? And who's TV show is it anyhow ? Do I really need to go back and point out how low nascar has been to grab cash and make you fans hysterical ? Let's see phoney cautions, Fining those drivers who point out a short coming on nascar's part, pure lies from the talkers, to name just a few. I COULD go on for pages, but Y'all already know of them for yourself. No there is never a conspiracy, just nascar's phoney TV show. Not a sport, but, more of a " reality show " the put on type. nascar is a parody of real racing. R.I.P. Dick Trickle, sir, A real deal race car driver. He ACTUALLY ran nascar when the racing was real. A real shame to lose Mr. Trickle, we will miss him and always remember his great driving, and sportsmanship. May You Go Fast Forever, Mr. Trickle.
