The bell hop at the counter tells them the room will cost $30 so they each put in $10 and go on up. When the manager returns he tells the bell hop that there is a discount on that room and it should only be $25. He gives the bell hop $5 to give back to the hunters. On his way to the room, the bell hop decides to keep $2 for himself and give $3 back to the guys (can't split $5 three ways evenly, he figures, and they won't know the difference). So. . .if each guy gets $1 back that means they each paid $9. 9 times 3 is 27 plus the 2 the bell hop kept makes 29, not 30. How is this possible?

Yea that took me awhile! The $2 the bell hop kept WOULDV'E made 25. It doesn't make 29 unless you're counting the wrong direction. They got a $3 discount and the $2 he kept has nothing to do with that side of the equation. The manager might be concerned though!

Bad math. 9 times 3 is 27 MINUS 2 is 25 which is the price.
What if your class of 30 had 15 boys, 20 people with long hair, and 5 Hispanics. That is 40, where did the 10 come from?

the $9 they each paid includes the $2 for the bell hop
so the guys paid $27 and are left with the $3 they got back from the bell hop

Because instead of adding that £2 on to the £27, that you done to obviously put us of the track. You should actually subtract the £2 from the £27, giving £25, then you would add the £5 to the £25 to give the original £30

It's simply a math quirk and depends solely on the presentation. For if you take th $5 from 30 = $25, add the $3 to the guys...$28, then add the $2 you get the 30.

There is no 30th dollar. The men paid $25 for the room and $2 for theft. That's $27. Each man paid $9, three nines are 27.

You know, statistics show that 5 out of 4 people have trouble with math. This is a good example why.
