I need to find a job, very soon. I feel like I dont know how to prepare myself though, so it makes me really nervous. When I ask for applications, and when I turn them in, there is usually a lot of people there buying things, does it look bad to wait in line to speak to them? There is a store that I really want a job at, but I havent gotten a call back yet. I turned in the application last tuesday, so I was thinking about going up there and asking about it, is it too late for that? And if there is a lot of people there in line, should I wait in line to speak to the person behind the counter?

You should absolutely wait for the store to finish with customers. Remember the customer comes first especially when they're buying.
Absolutely stop in to follow up on your resume. Ask if the manager has a moment for you. Tell them you are very interested in working for that company and you simply wanted to check on the status of your application.

Sometimes, it can take longer than just a week to hear back. When I graduated from college, I submitted my resume to about 10 employers. I only heard back from 1 and that took a few weeks. Are the places you are applying to have openings or are you just hoping they do? If they don't have openings, then you will have to wait until someone quits or gets fired. If you feel like you have to talk to someone, don't talk to a sales associate, ask to speak to a manager. Also, take a look at those applications. When you finish filling it out, does it look ordinary? You want that application to stand out somehow. Think about extracurricular activities or volunteer work. Be part of an organization or maybe take a night class to beef up the education section especially if it is a relevant skill.

If you really want a job at this store, you go and ask to speak to the hiring manager or HR person. You tell them how much you really want to work there. An employer loves to hear that there is someone out there that really wants to work for them. Recruiting is a hassle! As for waiting in line, that is expected and the polite way. Cutting ahead to the front of the line is considered rude.

The person behind the counter is very unlikely to be the person you need to speak to about your application, although they might be willing to call the manager over for you to ask about it.
