I habitually scratch and itch and have some scabs on my face, but the Doctor dignosed it as impetigo. Also he said I also have a MRSA infection and I also know what it looks like. I went to the CDC website and it looks more like an allegic reaction to something and the rash sounds like something that has been going around from school children, but it is not MRSA is there any way I can get a culture with out having to pay through the nose. I just think the the diagnosis is wrong and the medicne was over $200. what should I do?

always get a second opinion....or third....some doctors brush off serious diagnosees because they're too lazy to take care of the problem...I just read an article about a man with hodgkins disease who was passed off by 22 doctors as out of shape....

what the article said was to research yourself...look up your symptoms and take all of those diagnoses with you (in your head) if you bring paper the doctor might feel upstaged...
it also said to ask questions that point to the alternative diagnoses because it will lead the doctor to think outside of the box....

Dont limit yourself to one diagnoses if you truely feel there's something else wrong....there's hundreds of skin disorders/bacteria and other things that it could be...you oculd even stay with the same doctor...but take the articles advice...it might save you.

MRSA should not be diagnosed without a culture to verify.
Impetigo can usually be visibly diagnosed because it something doctors have seen a million times and are quite familiar with it's appearance. The thing is, if you go for a second opinion it will cost you again for a doctors visit and ultimately you will still need to purchase medication. You do have the option to discuss this with your pharmacists to get information on treatment for just Impetigo as opposed to the medication script you were given or if it would be different. I do not believe medication for Impetigo is expensive. I would start by consulting with the pharmacist and this would be free.

I would go to another Dr. You cannot make a diagonisis of MRSA by simply looking at an infection. Either by culture or swabbing the inside of your nose.

First off, the MRSA is around because of Dr's like your Dr. The over-prescribing of antibotics. I feel that Dr's are now getting a bigger incentives from the drug companies for getting people on these high priced drugs or should i say drug (only about 1-2 drugs that can kill MRSA infection).

If all the symptoms add up to impetigo and nothing else, then the doctor can figure that out without taking samples. However, if you believe it could be other things that have similar symptoms, then by all means, go to another doctor and get a second opinion!
