I'm a Canadian applying for a job in the US. The job description says I have to be legally eligible to work there.

does that mean i have to already have some sort of permit?
or just that I have to be able to obtain it (meaning I dont have a criminal background and etc)?

That means they are not going to sponsor you for a visa. When you apply you need to hold an appropriate visa to be able to work in the US.

"Legally eligible to work in US" ...

Basically, the company will not pay out the money (or do the legwork and fill in forms) to bring in someone from outside the country - it's expensive and a lengthy process.

If you are not a citizen of the US, then you must already have a work visa (in some form) that will allow you to be employed.

As a Canadian citizen, this usually means you are restricted to skilled worker qualifications (either through academics or experience or both), and require a US-based or US-owned company to sponsor your employment - even if it's a TN (Temporary NAFTA) classification. You cannot take a job away from an American ... which means the company HAS to do the paperwork before you can come work for them.

Sorry - your application will be rejected outright.

Have a work visa or current green card. Another way is to have an employer sponsor you.

You have to fill out an I-9 form when you are hired. On that form there is a list of documents that allow you to work legally in the USA. Here is a link so that you can download it so you can see for yourself what you need. Good luck! www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf

It means that you have to either (a) be a U.S. citizen, or (b) be a legal permanent resident (have a "green" card), or (c) have a visa of one of the types that allows a holder to work in the U.S.

It is illegal to be employed in the U.S. unless you either (a) are a U.S. citizen, or (b) are a legal permanent resident (have a "green" card), or (c) have a visa of one of the types that allows a holder to work in the U.S.

It means they don't want to sponsor a work visa. If you don't know what that is, you probably don't have one. It's going to be a waste of time applying for this job.
