Hello,
it would be great if you gave the information concerning your nationality.

Pay attention to the fact that people flying from certain countries to Hong Kong require a visa always.

Some of them:
Afghanistan, Armenia, Cameroon, Cuba, Georgia, Lebanon, Myanmar, Russia, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
A visa is essential for all these nationals and violation of any rule or law may lead to severe consequences.

People from some other countries possessing a passport can stay in Hong Kong for about three months without a visa:
Australia, Argentina, Austria, Britain, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mexico, Spain, Seychelles, Singapore, Vatican City, Switzerland and United States of America are to name a few of them.

If you are an American citizen and only wish to visit as a tourist for less than 90 days, you do not need a visa, but you must have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport.
Hong Kong is a great place to visit and I really hope you have a wonderful time.
If you need more information about visas etc, read the State Department page about HK here:

I don't think so. Typically ones gets a visa if they are planning on an extended stay for study or work purposes. If you are just going for a vacation you should only need a passport.
