It's a pity you aren't given a choice. German is very useful for precisely the reason that not many people are learning it nowadays, which puts it at a premium. Keep campaigning!

Spanish is the second language here... If most of the country spoke english and german then it'd prob be bigger in schools. You may not think so now but it is a great asset to know spanish when you look for a job. You are more likely to get the job over someone else that may be slightly more qualified.

I'm beginning to think I need to learn it. Everywhere I go in town nowadays, people are speaking Spanish.
There are now billboards in Spanish in my neighborhood also.
