In LB you can check out Pine Ave, it has bars, clubs and restaurants. I prefer 2nd Street in Belmont Shore. That's another area that has a lot of bars, shops and restaurants.
Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach isn't too far away. It has more of the above, but in a cool setting surrounded by the ocean. Plus, you can take PCH all along the coast to get there. Seal Beach is also a another place that is close by that you might enjoy if you're not from a beach community.
If you go north up the coast (look at a map) you can get to Redondo Beach. They have a great pier that is very popular. The drive is nice too. Beautiful views of the ocean and you get to go over the very tall Vincent Thomas Bridge that goes over the ports of LB, LA and the harbor. My out of town guests seem to be impressed by that bridge and the fact that at night it is lit up with blue lights.
P.S. Don't go east of 7th Street. Long Beach goes down hill in a hurry.

There's plenty of things to do in the city of Long Beach...you've got all kinds of clubs and restaurants up and down Pine Avenue (Downtown LB). You've got the marina area...The Yard House has really good food and a lively night atmosphere. The Pike has movie theaters, restaurants, Game Works (Chuck E. Cheese for grownups). The weather is nice these days...a harbor cruise isn't that expensive or you could always take a day trip to Avalon (Catalina Island). That's a nice tourist spot too...and the boat ride is pretty fun.

Drive up to the Sunset Strip. They have bands playing every night (House of Blues, Key Club, Viper Room, etc.) or you can hang out at one of the lounges. I like Boa Lounge because you don't have to be on a list like Skybar. Saddle Ranch is lot's of fun if you are into free kamakazee shots.

Lots of nightclubs, Hollywood, CA isn't to far away so you could walk the strip there. Disneyland is nearby, and so is Knottsberrys farm. Midevil times pretty awesome, and the beach is also nearby if you want to go to the peir or just kick back.
