Grieving is normal. Nonpet owners might find it difficult to understand how awful it can be when a cat with which you share your home dies. We can feel embarrassed that the death of a cat triggers such raw emotion, but feelings of bereavement when a cat dies is normal. Anger, denial, anxiety....all the emotions we experience when we lose a human friend are part of the grieving process. The stages of grief, from disbelief through to resolution, typically evolve for almost a year. Many cat owners get a new companion....the universal value of cats is that the qualities of our previous cat can be found in all others: dignity, beauty, independence, self-control, constancy, and companionship. There are helpless and needy cats and kittens out there that would love to have someone take care of them and love them. Think about it....I'm sorry. Really. I know how you feel, I've lost some great cat friends in my life. Don't listen to people who say "get a life, get a girlfriend or whatever" your fine, you have a right to be sad and upset and distraught...it hurts. Getting a new cat does help, but if you don't, you will eventually move through it and on, because life goes on.

I'm sorry for your loss. When one of our friends dies, no matter how old or young they may be, it hurts a great deal. Unfortunately there is no way around it. That having been said, it will get better with time. I know it doesn't seem like it right now, but one day you'll hear that song and realize that you're not crying. Looking at his picture and other such things will be easier as well.

Something you might want to look up is "The Rainbow Bridge" I'm not sure if you would call this a poem or a story but its something nice someone wrote for just this situation.

Finally, you said it's too late to apologize for being mad at him. I'm not sure why you were mad at him, but I wouldn't dwell on it too much. I'm sure he knew that you loved him. Besides, cats tend not to pay too much attention when we are mad at them. It's only when they are mad at us that they feel attention is to be paid! :-)

I can't believe some of these people are being so insensitive. Don't pay any attention to the people with negative attitudes. Obviously they've never lost someone (or a pet) that they loved.

I know exactly how you feel. I've been there twice... a dog I grew up with had to be put down when I was 13 & another one had to be put down a couple months ago.

Do not focus on things like being mad at your cat before he died. It'll do you no good and won't change anything.

You'll see... it takes time to grieve and move on. The hurt from losing him will never be gone but it does get easier to deal with.

I know exactly how you feel. Cats & dogs worm their way into our souls and we tend to feel very sad and sometimes guilty when they pass, so tears and grief are not abnormal at all! Focus on the good times you had with your pet and honor their memory. I certainly recommend reading "The Rainbow Bridge", I get all gooey just thinking about it :)

There. Now that you've cried yourself silly ... point yourself in the general direction of your local pet shelter and start looking at abandoned, lost, and otherwise perfectly adoptable pets that are in despirate need of a home right now. You don't need to wait too long, hop to it and adopt something wonderful. (Be sure to bring tissue, because you may start to leak a bit around the eyes & nose at the sight of all those needy pets).

You will never forget your friend who passed. The memories of love & loss are part of what makes you uniquely you and should be cherished.

It's OK. Your cat is in a better place than earth. He is with other cats there, waiting in this special room in front of the Golden Gates. He is being fed, petted, and loved. He is waiting for you to cross the bridge to Heaven with him. He misses you too, you know. You took care of him, and loved him, and played with him. Don't worry, you WILL see him again, I promise. Have Faith!!!

I know that there won't be another cat on earth like your cat, but after a while, adopting another cat might reduce your sadness. You won't be forgetting your kitty, just adopting a new one. If you adopt, (PLEASE ADOPT!), then you will be saving another cat's/kitten's life! Good Luck, and I am sorry for your cat. I will pray for you and your kitty!!!

PS. Crying helps!!! Cry your eyes out, pray, and mourn with your family. I'm sure your cat is now watching over you, now taking care of you, and he will know that you are sorry for being mad at him. Don't be too sad! You will see him again!!!

God Bless!

I'm sorry for your loss. It takes a while, but time heals all wounds, when the cats I grew up with died at 17 and 18, I was crushed, nothing could cheer me up. Then I found these 5 kittens that needed a home. I took care of them, and wound up with two of them, and know I see it as though my cats past away because they had a long happy life, and they knew it was time for me to help others. Take as long as you need to grieve.

It's devastating when you lose a pet. I've lost my share & I couldn't even talk to anyone about it, I just had to feel the grief & get over it when it was the right time. Cats can be oblivious to your feelings of anger/frustration, so don't beat yourself up about being angry with him. How many times have you been angry & then he jumps on your lap or licks your face etc. They don't hold onto negative feelings the way we do. I guess we can learn from them.
If it makes you feel better, adopt another cat or two. There are many animals that need loving homes. I'm up to four myself.

Same thing you do to get over any heartbreak. Keep yourself busy. Get some exercise. Go out and have some fun. And give it some time. When the time comes and you feel ready, get a new cat. All that will be left are the good memories and a new friend.

I am sorry for your cat.

When my kitten died my fiance brought home a cat of the same breed and pattern. It was shocking and I didn't want to accept it. But this feeling last less than an hour. And then you get busy carrying for a little creature. No time to be sad.

this poem helped me:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
