I don't see anything wrong with having a roommate of the opposite sex. However, i believe that one must make sure that the roommate of the opposite gender is someone that they do not remotely have interest in. Once you mess around, or sleep with your roommate..living together will eventually become awkward and horrible. If you can live with someone of an opposite gender and keep it platonic then there is nothing wrong with it.

Yes the are are many groups that believe that mixed gender room mates should be forbidden. The two that come to my mind first are the Orthodox Jews and Muslims. But I think that every religion sees this practice as illegal.
Modesty is important in all religions; and forbidding this protects the modesty and sexual purity of unwed men and women.

I don't suppose that Muslims or some Orthodox Jews would think very highly of it. I'm a Christian, though, and I've had mixed gender roommates, and didn't have a problem with it.

Of course there are. It doesn't have to be a religious thing, but there are other religions who are adamantly against males and females living together in a roommate situation.
Edit: Rape has nothing to do with the gender of your roommate. Throwing out silliness like that makes it harder for women to protect themselves from getting into actual rape situations.

Yes there are Mormons that don't allow that until marrage. I know this because my whole family is mormon. I am catholic though. Mormons don't believe in kissing or anything that could lead up to sex until they get married. This even includes types of cloths and dancing. So to answer your question yes there are many people that don't allow that. There are certain parents and religions that don't allow that.
I hope i helped

all major religions support chastity and modesty and so would frown on mixed gender room mates above the age of innocence
