Don’t understand why is it okay (socially acceptable and justified) for us to object when someone butts in at a line or at the checkout but not okay to stop another driver from merging into your lane in the last minute?
To me, it’s the same situation but the same reaction is seen differently? What gives?
Do people change their behaviour once they get into a car. To me I think we should all stop being pushed around by aggressive driver and all take cautious but firm action to stop the menace. If all drivers obey the rules and prevents others from butting in, then maybe these selfish and rude people will learn that they cannot get away with what they are doing? Sometime I think the North American culture fosters this selfish behaviour. In other countries, it is very common to report such reckless drivers but we see it as snitching.

When you stop a driver from merging you could cause an accident and hurt a lot of people, you can't be hurt merging in a grocery line. I am a professional driver. You can't change how others drive. Some people really don't drive well. And those of us that do need to watch more carefully to prevent an accident. A good driver does not tailgate, a good driver knows how to merge and how to allow another vehicle to merge. They are not really rude they just don't know. If you drive more aggressively you are not teaching others to drive better. If you are a good driver, it's up to you to stay safe on the roads.Your children learn from you. Would you want your 16 yr old to drive aggressively? I don't because he is not a good driver. He is still learning. Do you want other drivers to make the roads a hazard for him to drive? There are enough hazards without an aggressive driver creating more.

In the 1800s, in the American West, people began to refer to a handgun as "the great equalizer." It meant that the smallest, weakest person was just as deadly as the biggest, meanest bruiser.

In the last century, the automobile served a similar function. Two or three hundred horsepower meant that no one was particularly stronger than another. It also defines the difference in the situation you mentioned at a supermarket check out. Not letting a person cut in line is MUCH different that not wanting some driver cut you off in your lane. The difference is, that in a conflict with automobiles, someone may die.

If all drivers obey the rules, there would not be anyone "butting in."

By the way, if reporting bad driving behavior is anonymous, who's going to know it's snitching?

Your question and comments are interesting. I always allow people to enter the lane and I move over when I can. It's the courteous thing to do. They are moving inside a vehicle that weight a few pounds and have some driving on their rear ends and if everyone has to stop it's hard to get up to go. The traffic flows better if things keep going. I will yield my place on the freeway to anyone who needs assistance. I don't think they are being rude but I would be if I failed to help.

I've actually had people risk my life and their life trying to prevent me from jointing the traffic flow. Those are the people who behavior I question.

And I also try to be a polite drive because you never know if that other people just fought with his boss, or his wife, or robbed a bank and he may be equipped with a 38 or a 45.

its a crowded world and it is getting worse. we need to realize that and be willing to share the road with others. I have never felt it a big burden to let off the gas or touch the brakes or move to the left lane to let someone merge. They have a right to be on the road the same as I do. I'm sure you do things that makes others angry.

I know exactly what you are saying. I'm one of those drivers that will motion for you to go ahead of me. I do not like rude ppl at all. They especially annoy me in stores! No matter what I am doing, in a store or driving....I like to treat people the way that I would like to be treated.
