Just don't pay attention to him/her. Act as though the person doesn't even exist. You can try something like picking up your phone and dialling a number while the person is talking away.... you could start talking on the phone... this would tell the person how uninterested people are in listening to him/her.

well, I'm a little different from the rest of the posts here depending on how close to this co-worker you are... if it's a friend than tell them to give it a rest already.
Or just look at them and say sorry all I heard was blah, blah, blah.
I feel sometimes you have to be rude to others otherwise they don't get the suttle hints b/c they're just talking to hear themselves speak. Could be a nervous habit of theirs and maybe they don't realize they're that annoying!
Of course you should try to be polite and give suttle hints but if all else fails then the above mentioned may be your only option.

The same thing I did when I was little and my parents wouldn't shut up about whatever they were talking about.
It's one of those tolerance things you have to build up. I can tune just about anyone out. There are certain command words, such as, "Old Testament," "George Bush," and "You're right, but you're still wrong."

If they are coming into your office and just chatting away, stand up and act as if you are going somewhere, usually they will take the hint and leave.

I tend to either walk away or act like I am so engrossed in my work I can no longer listen to what they are saying.

Earplugs.the kind used for swimming...when the person starts ranting away pull it out and say excuse me "What did you just say"? They will get he hint!

walk away. they'll ge tthe hint when people just starting walking away from them mid-sentence
