There has been a wave of new atheists in recent times, in particular after 9/11 when a lot of people were woken up to just how dangerous religion could be.
'Atheist' is no longer such a rude word in the US, and people are coming out as well and joining up.
But when any defined group of people is lower than a certain percentile - and especially if it's disliked or distrusted by the general public - there's little chance of it organising in person. And having little else in common, there's not much impetus to organise anyway.
The web, however, is a perfect tool for atheism to build: atheist advocacy sites are everywhere, and well-subscribed.
We gather, and make our plans. Soon, we strike. Muahahahahahaaaa...

My suspicion is that there is a significant fraction of Americans who say that they are Christian but privately hold no religious beliefs whatsoever. Maybe 5% or so.
Second, Christians have an organization. It's a church, and they go to it weekly (maybe). Atheists have very few organizations, and the fraction of atheists who are members of atheist/explicitly secular organizations is much smaller than the churchgoing segment of the Christian population.
So we're individuals, and no place is better for finding like-minded individuals than the Internet.
(To say nothing of the correlation between atheism and interest in computers.)

There is a direct relationship between education and Atheism.
There is also a direct relationship between education and income.
Therefore the more educated you are the more likely it is that you will make more money and will be an atheist. More money = computers and internet access.
Its all about education.
You question is like stating that it appears that there are almost no Congo natives online. It must be because they are fed up with blogs and getting their profiles deleted. Natives from Congo need to toughen up.

This is the American, not international, version of yahoo!answers, so it's centered in the US. A very large amount of Americans are agnostics, and many "Christians" don't care that much about their religion-- whereas many people that consider themselves atheists care a lot about the effect of religion upon law and society. Therefore, many atheists care enough about religion & spirituality to visit this section of Y!A.

Oh yeah, cause I don't act like this in real life.... Oh wait, yes I do. I don't care if the interent gives me the feeling of being anonymous or not. Cause I believe what I want and if Christians have the right to make people feel bad for not believeing what they want through the interent, I have the right to tell people I don't believe in God.

In american society, one dominated by religion- few people are willing to be outspoken about their atheistic beliefs. Most of the people I know who attend religious services... don't believe in god. (there are other social benefits to religion).
I think you'll find that there is a silent majority of atheists. The internet is a place where you can spout off your true opinion, without fear of retribution.

Yes, that's probably correct. There's probably a lot more atheists out there than you think, but they would never dare to share it in public. But anonymously on the web - all the time. Either atheists are more Internet savvy, or there really are many more of us in the real world.

Lack of repercussions. We don't have to fear theists opinions and getting ostracized on the Web.
Also, since most atheists have studied religions, we are more likely to be conversant on the subject. And we have a vested interest in pointing out inconsistenceis and faulty logic, since religion affects our day to day life. Ergo, it's partially a sampling bias here.

They are scared to say the truth, while on the internet they can. I was hounded out of a forum by a fundie once for stating that I was an atheist, being in Europe and he in the US he could not come to my house as he threatened to do but I can understand how this threat could be frightening to someone in reach.
