Its the duty of high ranking military officials to do the job assigned by their higher authorities. But as an individual they might be having some misunderstandings with the job assigned, which cant be exposed in a direct manner as it will become contempt of higher authority.

But once they retire they are free to give their opinions because, now they are one among the superior authority ,the public.

in the army we do as we are told. We protect democracy we do not practice it. Alot of soldiers oppose the war. I for one was for it in the beginning. Saddam had to brought to international justice. Now its being drawn out and Saddam has been brought to justice. While on active duty we support our objective and personal feelings cannot play a part while following orders.

When you're in uniform you cannot speak out against the government and whats happening. You can be UCMJ'd/Court Martialed and either dropped in rank or discharged. If he would of said something before he was offically discharged, he could of gotten dishonorably discharged and that means no pension for him.
