Give your dog plenty of exercise. When your dog needs to go out, take him or her out. You will know he needs to because he will give you pleading looks, stand by the door, bark, etc. There may be whining, scraping and barking accompanying the need for exercise outdoors as well.
Pet him. If he puts his head in your lap, scratch behind his ears. Dogs just want to be loved. They love neck and tummy scratches and a dog massage is one of the best ways to show your affection for your dog.
Hug your dog, too. Most dogs, especially the small to medium ones, take this as a sign of affection. You can do this while you pet your dog.
Reward your dog. Many dogs, and Goldens and Shelties in particular, exist to please their owners, and they will do it. You have to reward them. Give them treats that are healthy and made specially for dogs. You don't have to buy the treats, you can make excellent ones yourself at home.
Talk to your dog. Dogs love it when you talk to them. You will develop your own language together and share intimate moments. And no dog will ever tell you to stop going on about a bad day at the office!
Spend quality time with your dog. Your dog loves attention. Set aside time every day to spend just with your dog. Even if it's just lying in front of the TV together, stroking your dog's ears and resting together.
Prioritize yourself to your dog. Set regular and consistent times to feed your dog and take him or her for walks. Your dog will love you for it because it's doing him or her a world of good for their well-being. Doing things for your dog at the same time every day will let it know what to expect at that time.
Cherish your dog. Always respect your dog and the love that your dog has brought into the house. Be kind, caring and considerate in the way that you treat your dog. Your dog is a family member.
Give your dog a comfortable place of its own. Your dog's sleeping area should be its alone, not to be shared with piles of washing or storage boxes. Make sure it is out of the way of people who walk through and other annoyances.
SIT
1) Stand about a foot from your dog, facing him/her. With one finger, point to the dog’s backside while saying “SIT.”
2) Take your hands and gently move your dog’s body into sitting position, repeating the word “SIT” every five seconds.
3) When your dog is sitting, give him/her a treat and verbal praise.
Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3. Eliminate step two when your dog sits on their own.
STAY
1) Instruct your dog to sit. Extend your hand, palm flat (as you would signal to
stop) and say the word “STAY.”
2) Repeat the word “STAY” every five seconds as you back away from your dog
Slowly, keeping your hand extended.
3) When you are about ten feet away, take down your hand and say “COME
HERE .”
4) Give your dog a treat only when he/she waits for your hand to come down and
for you to call them.
Repeat steps 1-4 , giving treats only when your dog stays put until your cue. Say
“NO” and start over if your dog comes before you give a signal. Next, try holding up
a treat while your “STAY” hand is still extended. If your dog does not stay, say
“NO” and hold your flat hand close to his/her face, saying “STAY.” Try pushing
your hand farther forward when you hold up the treat, to keep your dog focused on
the command rather than the reward.
LAY DOWN
1) Instruct your dog to sit. Hold your hand palm down and push it to the floor,
saying either “DOWN, “ or “LAY DOWN.”
2) Gently pull your dog’s front paws until they are laying down, repeating the
word “DOWN.”
3) Give your dog a reward and verbal praise when they are laying down.
Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3, eliminating step 2 when your dog lays down on command.
ROLL OVER
1) Instruct your dog to sit then lay down. Take a treat and hold it at your dog’s
Chin. Circle it very slowly around your dog’s head, allowing he/she to
follow it.
2) Say the words “ROLL OVER” as you bring the treat around the top of your
dog’s head. At this point, your dog should roll over naturally, trying to get
the treat.
3) Give your dog reward and praise when they have rolled over on command.
SHAKE HANDS
1) Instruct your dog to sit. Extend your hand, palm up, about a foot from the
ground and a foot from your dog. Say the word “PAW.”
2) Take your dog’s paw and place it in your extended hand, repeating the word
“PAW.”
3) Give your dog reward and praise when he/she gives you’re his/her paw.
Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3, eliminating step 2 when your dogs gives you’re his/her paw
on command. Once your dog has learned to do this, try saying “OTHER PAW,” and
moving your hand slightly to the left or right, depending on which paw you want
them to give you. Keep switching back and forth until your dog alternates between
paws.
Now that your dog has learned these simple tricks, continue to allow them to show off. You should keep in mind that you and your dog have worked hard to get to this point, and being consistent about practicing will keep your dog’s tricks fresh in his/her mind. You may want to use words or phrases different than the ones suggested above for each trick. That is fine, as long as you use the same word or phrase every time, and as long as it is not a word or phrase you will use for something else. You can also use these techniques for other tricks, altering the instructions slightly for each new trick. Enjoy your dog’s new abilities, and don’t forget to let your dog know how much you care about them every day.

I just went through this a few months ago with my pup.
* Please do not put a blanket or paper in the crate, in only encourages wetting.
*Keep the crate in your bedroom at night.
*Drop treats in the cage so the dog lets its self in the crate.
*I always told my pup ‘go to bed’ when it was time to enter the create, and eventual she ran for the crate willingly on comand.
*Kongs are the best invention on Earth, Hartz also has hollow fire hydrant toys at Wal-mart, fill them with beniful(canned food) and carrots and keep them freezer. I have three! This will help with chewing and keep the puppy safely entertained in your absence.
* Never let the dog use soft toys in the crate.
* when the dog is out keep it on a leash in the house, so you know exactly where the pup is at all times! (most of my dogs accidents happened due to my lack of focus)
*Go out very often even if you do not think the dog needs to use the bathroom, and always try to bring the dog to the same area and a command ‘hurry, hurry’ as the dog goes. And bring treats to reward this behavior, verbal praise is very helpful!
Accidents will happen so please do not be mad at the pup. It takes almost 6-9 monthes build bladder muscles in a puppy!
*Go out every two hour with the dog for the next month, then gradually move up the time. Be careful not to wait too long, pups are prone to infections if they hold it too long.
*Look for signs such as pacing, circling, sneezing, barking, fear, excitment, tail wagging may be a clue it is time to go out.
*My dog has a cow bell on the door and knows to ring for outside time. Everytime I opened the door, I would ring it, then leash the dog and say 'outside'. After a while the dog rang the bell when she wanted to go out. (sometimes only due to boredom, but I took her out anyway!) She know the bell meant outside at five monthes old.
*Taking your dog to Puppy Kindergarten is worth every penny! My dog is confident, plays well with other pups, happy with strangers, and learns new commands quickly all thanks to Puppy-K. Plus, the dogs are so cute!
Look for a trainer who uses positive methods only! Make sure the trainers doesn't use prongs, jerking on the chain, or yelling at the puppy in their teaching technique. Clickers are GREAT.
**Practice 'Come' frequently, it could save your pups life!
Good Luck! feel free to write with questions!
Try the ‘My Smart Puppy’ DVD/Book it is great!

It will take a while to get adjusted to the new pup. She sounds like she needs plenty of exercise, training and most importantly a crate. In the crate she may still potty she's just a pup it will take a while before she can hold it longer. That will save you and your family from losing it. Good Luck
