I've heard the stuff about not giving OTC medicines to children under six, but what about prescription meds? My son was given a prescription for allergies and it seems to be the only thing that helps him.

Medicines aren't really good for anyone, but if it is necessary, the doctor would probably know what the best medication is for kids. I would trust whatever the doctor is prescribing.

I think the only recall was for over the counter medicines and not for prescribed medications. They have taken a few medicines off the counter and I've heard it has to do with the dosage as well.

here's a copy of the article I found for you, gives you the medicines as well:

Children's Medicine Recall

You may have heard the talk for several weeks now; today it is official. Many top pharmaceutical companies have issued a Children's Medicine Recall. Though the companies are participating in the Children's Medicine Recall voluntarily, parents across the nation are alarmed, especially as we are now entering cold and flu season. Johnson and Johnson, Novartis, and the company Wyeth have all participated in the Children's Medicine Recall, and have begun to have their cough and cold medicines pulled from shelves across the nation.

The crux of the concern is that dosing instructions for infants and children under two are not clear and therefore the risk of child overdose is great. Here is a list of the cough, cold, and decongestant products that have been included in the Children's Cold Medicine Recall.

· Dimetapp® Decongestant Plus Cough Infant Drops

· Dimetapp® Decongestant Infant Drops

· Little Colds® Decongestant Plus Cough

· Little Colds® Multi-Symptom Cold Formula

· PEDIACARE® Infant Drops Decongestant (containing pseudoephedrine)

· PEDIACARE® Infant Drops Decongestant & Cough (containing pseudoephedrine)

· PEDIACARE® Infant Dropper Decongestant (containing phenylephrine)

· Robitussin® Infant Cough DM Drops

· Triaminic® Infant & Toddler Thin Strips® Decongestant

The problem with the over the counter medicines was the parents not giving the children the correct dosage. A doctor, if a good one, is qualified to select a proper dosage for your child. I would not worry.

My younger son was on prescription Zantac for the first three months of his life, and he's perfectly fine. This is a question you should ask your pharmacist. Some prescription medicines are safe, some aren't.

as long as you follow the dosing the directions as described by the doctor then he should be fine taking it. I still give my 5 yr old and 15 month old otc meds , but like any medicine I give it according to how much they weigh.

the only problem with the over the counter cold medicines is parents not giving their kids the right dosage if parents have any sense they will know not to over dose their children and give them the correct dosage

Just make sure it's the right dosage if your not sure call the pharmacy that you use or the doctor. don't listen to what people say on here as far as how much to give the child unless you want your child in danger some of them are true but i wouldn't risk it.
