Schizophrenia is not a single disease but a spectrum of disorders. I have "schizophrenia paranoia" (DDD) diagnosed over 40 years ago. The cause of this disorder, which includes hallucinations, is not known. Don't let any one tell you that it is. It comes on suddenly and often violently and ends just as suddenly. I don't know of any proof that it is genetic. It began in me while I was attending a university there was some stress at the time but not untoward.

To find out more about these disorders just type "schizophrenia" into Yahoo! web search; in the many links that come up wikipedia has a good summary.

Good luck in your research, good mental health, peace and Love!

Researchers haven't identified the cause or causes of schizophrenia, although they believe genetic factors play a role. About 1 percent of the general population develops schizophrenia compared with 10 percent of those with a close family relative who has the disease. Chemical or subtle structural abnormalities in the brain may contribute to causing this illness.

There is debate in the medical world as to whether genetics can play a role in making it more likely, but largely schizophrenia can be traced back to some sort of trauma. it is often seen in adults who were abused either mentally, physically or sexually as a child. Or even a combination of all of them. The defense mechanism to a child or adult who goes throught such severe trauma, is to go inside themselves in order to be able to bear the experience. Often children who are sexually abused do this, they make a "pretend" world that they escape to while the abuse is happening. This is done as a way of escaping it or being able to bear it, which eventually can lead to schizophrenia. The child gets accustomed to "escaping" into this imaginary world and sometimes continues this long after the abuse has ended, eventually leading to schizophrenia. Hope that helps!

There are many different causes of schizophrenia. It could be inherited, be on account of excess dopamine in the brain, stressful/traumatic life events, drug use or injury to the brain are all potential causes of schizophrenia. Essentially it makes one live in an altered reality sometimes and reduces their ability to cope and get by in the every day world.

schizophrenia is believed to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. In regard to what causes it, there are hereditary factors as well as environmental factors to consider. Recently 35 separate studies inthe UK linked moderate to frequent marijuana use to adult onset ( non hereditary) schizophrenia. So the old legends about " reefer madness" may have some credence after all.
