The U.S. dropped two bombs in order to give Japan the impression that we could make as many nuclear bombs as we wanted. In reality, we used up all of our material making theses two bombs (plus the third test bomb that was detonated in the New Mexico desert to prove that the concept worked).
If Japan had not surrendered, we would have invaded the next year. Invasion plans called for the use of nerve gas and any additional nuclear bombs that we could slap together in the meantime to be dropped on the invasion sites ahead of the invading U.S. forces in order to clear a path. Whether this was ever a realistic plan is debatable; we could make nerve gas, but our supply of nuclear material was all used up at the time.
===edit===
In response to what "cmdrbnd0" said, Japan was working on a "dirty bomb" using German uranium to drop on the California coast and shower the Western U.S. with radiation. Japan could not make a fully functional atom bomb.

The bombs in Japan were not nuclear weapons. Atomic and nuclear are 2 totally different things. And at the time that we dropped the 2 atomic bombs they were the only ones that we had. There were "test" bombs that could have been dropped.

Maybe, probably.
I think what should have happened is to drop the bomb on some uninhabited target (a mountain, perhaps), then walks the bombings closer and closer to Tokyo until the Japs surrendered.

Actually we did not.
there were only 3 built at the time. one was used as a test weapon named "Jumbo".
the other two were dropped over japan.
had Japan not surrendered an invasion would have occurred and it would have been up to a year before we had produced more bombs.

PLEASE DO NOT ASK THIS Q. Why?
They have enough to kill everyone in this world; and also if there is something called outerspace world.
USA the first sole PROPIETER user of atom bomb ( USA used against JAPAN).
If all start making ATOM BOMB, which is propitery of USA; THEN USA can not control the WORLD. It is natural that the SOLE PROPIETER HAS THE RIGHT OVER ATOM TECHNOLOGY.
However USA, the propieter, is kind enough to grand permission to other nations for PEACEFUL use.
All can use it for PEACE (except propieter user- USA).
Like POOR india is making deal with USA for peaceful use by POOR Indian.

PLEASE do no longer ASK THIS Q. Why? they have adequate to kill all and sundry in this international; and likewise if there is something called outerspace international. u . s . the 1st sole PROPIETER person of atom bomb ( u . s . used against JAPAN). If all commence making ATOM BOMB, that's propitery of u . s .; THEN u . s . can no longer administration the international. it fairly is organic that the only PROPIETER HAS the best suited OVER ATOM technologies. besides the undeniable fact that u . s ., the propieter, is form adequate to grand permission to different countries for non violent use. All can use it for PEACE (different than propieter person- u . s .). Like undesirable india is making take care of u . s . for non violent use by using undesirable Indian.

No.
The 'third bomb' was a bluff. We only had enough enriched uranium and plutonium for three bombs. Since the first was expended in the 'Trinity' test that left two.
The soonest we would have had enough material for a fourth bomb would have been late December.

Actually, at that time we didn't have a 3rd bomb to drop but we were working on one and would have used it if necessary. Did you know that Japan was very close to finishing a Bomb themselves and would most assuredly have used it if we hadn't dropped ours first?
