well I was unaware that antihistamines cause convulsions in children.
I am allergic to antihistamines. It doesn't effect me as bad as it did when I was a child but I try not to take then unless I can't stand it anymore. When I was a teen my mom gave me one for a cold and my heart raced beating so hard it felt like it was going to come out of my chest. I got the shakes and just this scary unnerving feeling. Now I take zyrtec sometimes. I don't have those same feelings but unless I want to sleep for several hrs I can only take a half and it still makes me feel tired but it helps my sinus for awhile. My son takes it also and has no side effects at all. I know this doesn't answer your questions.

There are lots of different antihistamines. If one causes side-effects, try another. Also, once you have settled on a name brand that works over the counter, you can check for a generic; most have them available. Just compare the contents on both packages.
