Study hard, make good grades, score well on the ACT and SAT, stay out of trouble, volunteer in the community, participate in school activities, and get a job.

If you are focused, the best way to get a good deal on a degree from great school is to attend public junior college or community college for 2 years, then transfer to a premier school (think big-name state school or non-ivy league elite private school).

DON'T take the SAT until after your first year of junior college. This will likely give you as good a score as possible.

There will NOT be a lot of peer support to excel in this environment, so you better be independent-minded and driven. AND you will need to attach yourself to another individual or small group of similarly motivated students. You will NOT make it without doing this.

If you do well your first year, and you are worried about your grades dropping (and they might), sign up for a semester exchange program thru your school. Most overseas Universities are less competitive than U.S. schools. And, this should look good for your transfer application.

If you want the degree for free, sign up for ROTC or the America Corps.

Skip the SAT stuff unless you are planning to go to a high dollar university. Check out your local community college. You can do your first two years at a much cheaper rate than if you went to a university. (Just so you know, everybody, regardless the school they attend/degree they seek, does the same work in the first two years, so why not save some money along the way?)
After the first two years you will then be able to transfer into the college/university of your choice. If you already know what college/university you want to attend, check out their transfer policy and work toward that while you are at the CC.
Good luck!

Like, improve your writing skills. Quit using like to start sentences. Writing a good personal statement/essay.

Don't blow off your senior year. Get good grades. Do well on your ACT/SAT.

Visit colleges you're interested in.

Be involved in a few/multiple activities. Show you're a well-rounded student and would be an asset to the college.

Some colleges may require reference letters. Develop a good relationship with at least one teacher, employer, and community leader. Find people who can talk about your best assets.

Check with prospective colleges about any other requirements they may have. Some colleges require church related things to be done (private colleges). If you're looking a private college, a minister/paster/priest/bishop would be a good reference also.

When in high school, try to take AP (advanced placement) classes. You can also prepare for college by taking classes at your local community college.
Try to challenge yourself academically, especially in 10th and 11th grade. Instead of taking an easy elective, go for an extra math or science class.
In order to prepare for the SAT, get an SAT practice book and every weekend, take a practice test. Practice really does help when it comes to the SAT.
Good luck!

Colleges like a well rounded student. Playing sports doesn't hurt because it shows that you were able to handle the commitment of a sport all the while getting good marks. Extra cirricular activities act the same way as sports. They figure the more involved you are, the more time away from your studies. And if you get good grades and are very involved, then you must be an intelligent person because of the time spend away from your studies.

With a beer in hand. No wait, you meant academically. Okay, with 2 beers in hand.

Also make sure there is at least one Starbuck's within a mile or so those really help.

The best way to get to college is to apply yourself in middle and high school; so that you qualify for scholarship monies. You'll also score well on the SAT, if you take your school work seriously. Of course, if you're looking for an easy way out--there is none.
