My boyfriend and I were invited to a casual enagement party for his best friends cousin. They were all good friends years ago in high school. When we ran into him last week he invited us to the party at his house. Should we give them a gift? And if so what would be appropraite? Mind you I have only met him two or three times.

Give a nice congratulatory card to the couple. You are not inclined to bring a gift...but a card is a nice gesture and shows that you didn't just show up to eat the food.

Gifts are often not given at engagement parties, and when they are given, they are small, token gifts of good wishes. A nice card would really be enough under the circumstances, I think.

My fiance's aunt and uncle threw us a small engagement party. Most guests gave us just a warm hug and hearty good wishes. A few gave us a card, and one gave us a card with a gift card in it. We weren't expecting anything at all.

The ONLY time gifts are "required" is to a bridal/baby shower.

So, no you do not have to give them an engagement gift.

Give a nice card of congrats.

Proper ettiquette says that you should not invite people to your engagement party who will not also be invited to your wedding. I would save the gift-giving for the wedding...especially since you are not close.

You are not obligated to give a gift.
However, if you are inclined, find out where they are registered and either pick something affordable or get a gift-card.

Perhaps you should explain that you are saving up to give them a wedding gift instead!

I don't think it is required but if you feel comfortable with getting something then get a card that says "Congratulations on your Engagement". That should be fine.

You never HAVE TO give a gift. It's a personal choice.
