We are wondering what to put about the reception on the invitations. Should we simply write at the bottom, Reception immediately following ceremony, or something more descriptive like Lasagna and refreshments will be served immediately after ceremony.

I would just "reception immediately following" or whatever wording you choose. No need to put the meal or anything. People know what to expect.

Hi and congratulations!

If your reception is at the SAME location as your ceremony, you can simply put in the corner of the invitation...Reception immediately following the ceremony.

If your reception IS immediately following...but is at ANOTHER location, then it's best to include a separate card with the information:

Reception immediately following ceremony
[venue name]
[address]

Good luck!

One option is to things the old-fashioned way, the way we did it way back in the 1900s before The Wedding Industry invented those worse-than-useless RSVP cards. We did our RSVPs by phone. (No, the bride doesn't have to take/make all those calls personally; friends and family help.) Since we knew that we'd have at least one conversation with guests before the wedding, we didn't worry about cramming every possible bit of information into the invitation. We could tell people over the phone how dressed up to get, what sort of reception we'd planned, how to find the church, whether or not their children or boyfriend were welcome, and even (only if they asked, of course) what gift we'd like.

Another option is reception cards. These are about 3x4 inches and would say something like "Seated dinner and dancing to follow" or "Buffet and cocktails served after the ceremony". Alternately, you can make the main invitation all about the reception -- "request the pleasure of your company / for dinner and dancing / to celebrate the marriage of, etc" -- and enclose ceremony cards saying something like "Ceremony at Two O'Clock."

I have always thought that simply putting "Reception to follow" or something like that would be sufficient. However....I had my wedding at a Bed & Breakfast so it was all at the same location, and I put "Reception to follow" and my husband's side of the family practically went crazy not knowing what the plan was. I probably got 12-15 phone calls over the course of 6 months from the ladies asking if there's going to be food and telling me that nobody knows what's going on or if they should eat. I started to get pissed and annoyed. So, before my own wedding, I would have said that most intelligent people know that a wedding reception has food, unless otherwise stated. But as we see from my in-laws....this is not always the case. :)

If the reception is at the same location as the wedding, you write "Reception immediately following ceremony". If its at another place, you indicate that on a smaller card with the location, address, and time. No need to include details of the menu.

I would just put in on the bottom that the reception will follow the ceremony.

"Reception Following Ceremony At **location**"

In your wedding program, if you are having one, you could put the menu.
