I assume this is on Vista. There should be an option to delete it on re-boot. You don't say which Virus software either. Try downloading vcleaner from http://free.grisoft.com
Then start the machine in safe mode and open a command window. Run vcleaner from there. It scans and repairs many viruses that have too much hold on the machine to clear otherwise. Consider changing to AVG free anti-spyware.

The Humble is right! Start with booting into safe mode and run your AV to see if it can remove the virus.
However, some viruses load automatically and are blocked from removal because they are on memory.
In those cases I use a bootable CD with the antivirus to remove the treat.
I prepared a bootable CD that is called UltimateBootCD that has plenty of tools to help you with the problem.
Make sure you create this CD on a CLEAN pc or you will probably carry the virus on the CD as well.
Cheers.

Run your antivirus program in Safe Mode. Windows will not be loaded and you should be able to catch any self-executing viruses.
If you are not familiar with Safe Mode:
Restart --
>>>As soon as you see the system trying to load (it will probably be black and white)
>>>and before Windows tries to load,
>>>press and hold the F8 key.
>>>Continue holding it down until you see a black and white DOS menu. I think Safe Mode is F3.
Click Start, Run. Run your AV program.
(When it is finished, you will “EXIT” to Windows. Your desktop icons will probably be out of order – just drag them back.)
After you run your AV software, I would Restart, then run a full system scan to be safe.
Also, in Safe Mode, hopefully you can restore your system to a time when Windows worked.

You should connect this HDD with other as slave and scan it through anti virus. I would suggest you use PANDA anti-virus. If its working, its ok. otherwise you have to format it.
