There's this factory near where I work that does welding. Everytime I walk by, I pause for a few minutes to watch them. Is this potentially harmful to my eyes?

If you sit there and stare at it all day then yes you can do some serious damage to your eyes. Looking at it for a few seconds when you walk by is not recomended, but its probably will not cause any long term damage.

One day i was welding all day and I kept accidentaly sparking the arc before I dropped my helment down and after working that whole day i woke up that night and apparently blisters had formed on my pupils. When i opened my eyes the blisters broke and I has two eyes full of puss and it hurt like hell. So, my recomendation is unless you have a welders helment/glasses on, do not look at the arc.

Yes, you can get welder's flash. That's why the people doing the actual welding wear sheilds.

Don't do that anymore.

Well my mother and grandmother have told me that yes, it is harmful to the eyes which is why the welders wear those black goggle things. But it might just be an old wives tale. I'm not sure.

Yes, that is why welders wear the specially tinted and coated eye shields. It's like staring at the sun.

"Blind" is unlikely, but painful arc-eye from ultraviolet radiation damage is quite possible. The closer you are, the more likely it is.
This is usually a temporary condition, though permanent scarring is possible in severe cases.

Excess UV also underlies "snow-blindness" which again, does not normally leave permanent damage, but may.
